Hi Amanda
I hope you don't feel I am too cheeky but do you ever have for sale. A refurbished echomatic or would I have to purchase a relic and then ask you to cost a refurb
I would love to own one
I am a complete Hank Marvin nut

Kind regards

Hi,

Erik, Thanks for the info, the Factotum I just acquired has one o/c head and another reading 11k.

I also have 3 heads from my earlier factotum that are o/c so I've got a good selection to play with!!

Glen, at the moment I have none for sale, but it is possible to do a refurb job, although the cost would depend on the condition of the unit..

Thanks Amanda
I will contact you again when I can locate a echomatic to purchase in reasonable condition for you to refurb

Hi Amanda,
The only article I seem to recall on tape head repair I think was for a Long Tom (may have been on another site). That head has 2 x 330 ohm coils in series, if I remember and one was open cct.
I imagine trying to rewind a tape head would be tricky!! Are you able to get the head apart. Possibly the most likely place for a break would be where the coil ends join to the back of the terminal lugs.

On a similar topic, I was wondering if you have an LC meter in your toolkit. I would be very interested in measuring the inductance, and also DC resistance of a Meazzi replay head, just to confirm the figures quoted elsewhere, of 650 ohms and 650mH.

Hi John,

The DC resistance is around 650 ohms, mine are about 655.

Actually I just realised my one DMM has inductance measurement..

Incidentally, some years back Sony were having problems with heads going o/c, this was traced to corrosion on the wires which was caused by the girls making the heads perspiration becoming more acidic at a certain time of the month, the problem was solved by having them wear gloves!!

Hi Amanda,
Interesting story! Of course perspiration is also a killer of guitar pickup coils - particularly the strat, but it's the gutarist's own sweat/beer/etc that can somehow get in, and over a period of time, can corrode the wires where they contact the poles.

Is it possible to rewind a tape head ? Is the coil encased in resin or laquer. I suppose the wire would be something very fine, like 44 AWG.
If you get a chance to take an inductance reading of one the Meazzi heads, that would be much appreciated. Charlie and I use such figures when calculating things like leakage feedback response curves in our echo unit.
