Try Goran Tangring's site. He has some extremely good tabs and backing tracks.. and they are free.
For instrumentals you need at least 11 or 12 gauge strings... or 10's at a push.
Cheers Peter

HI I was 64 when I decided to start again. I'm 65 and, finding the same problems as you. Fingers are like sausages(not as tasty) and, they just wont reach that note without a really awkward stretch. Keep going, it is all worth it in the end. Every little sign of progress, spurs you on. If I don't get "That Sound, I wont worry too much either. Good on ya mate.
Regards
Roger

I'm sitting up and paying attention You don't mention what make and type of guitar you have but as a general tone for possibly a playing sound 10-46's 11-49's or maybe 12's would suit a lot of Strats. We have on this site under Tabs and Chords lots of free tabs plus place's were you can purchase tabs backing tracks ect.Good luck and the more you practice the better you become and sound. Pete

Strings? Go for 11's Elixir Nanoweb. They give the tone, are easy on the fingers, dont rust and they keep their tone for a LONG time. I've used them for years. Cheers Ian

Cheers Ian They sound good, I find strings like Ernie Ball dont last that long. I've used 9's for a long time. Find they give that light etherical tone that I like. Dumcan.

Elixirs look expensive, but they last a-g-e-s, keep a great tone and save you a lot of money over time. Like Ian, once I tried Elixirs a few years back, I have used them ever since. I'm older than you but my fingers are as flexible and supple as when I was playing back in the '60s. I've been taking Glucosamine for a long time and I'm sure that has been a contributory factor.

You'll get an untold number of suggestions on what strings to use, most of us have our own favourites. Why not give Newtone a go, they're made in the UK, don't cost the earth and have a round, rather than hexagonal, core, so they're a bit easier on the fingers. I'm not suggesting that you necessarily buy them from there, but if you have a look at the Stringsdirect website they seem to have every brand under the sun.
Good luck, Len

dont know if my reply went on... thanks for all your help guys...guitar a fender strat..not a expensive one..would put a photo on but dont know how ...help gauge of strings.... would the guitar setup have to be changed by a large degree many thanks guys Depends on what gauge strings Strat was sold with. If it was on 9's, and you fitted 11's, then a little work on the nut may be needed etc. What Strat did you buy? I used a 1990's Squier for years and I did alright. Now i have my Brason, but that's a very different animal. Best way to put a photo on is to open, say, a Photobucket account (Free), upload it to there and then copy and paste the direct link and the picture then appears in your post. Simples? Cheers Ian

I changed from 9-42 to 11-49 on my Squier CV and had no problem with the nut, but I had to tighten the truss rod about half a turn. It's easy enough, the instructions on checking it's set right are in the Strat care guide on the Fender website. Regards Len

UBH CDs are available from Leosden. Google it. AVOID the the well known auction site rip off CDs that have dozens of illegal tracks on. Try some of Goran Tangring FREE BTs and tabs. Cheers Ian

Tasty guitar!! Love the colour! You sorted out the Pic thing quickly. You're right about the the well known auction site ones. most are rip offs from UBH+Shadows Workout series+Warren Bennett's tracks etc. They don't care whose they steal!! Cheers Ian

You will do well, laalfella. It's never too late. I picked up the guitar after a 40-year hiatus and started from zero again. I didn't know what guitar to use and which amp. This site has been extraordinarily helpful. But, unlike you, I wanted to nail Hank's early sound! I'll do that someday.
Good luck,
Andy
