Hi All my trusty old Sony MDR-CD280's are nearing the end of their life and I'll need a pair of BUDGET Headphones to replace them. Some headphones on the market today cost silly money compared to others so I'm after advice on what to go for. As I use them for mixing, and for playing the guitar when the Monitors are OFF (like late at night)they mustn't colour the sound, so BassXX types will likely not do. They must be able to give a clean sound without background muffling but give good Bass response that matches the track and also representative Mids and Highs. Any ideas, folks? cheers ian

As Phil said it really depends how serious you are about recording/mixing. As with all things in life nothing will do everything perfectly..
If you want to track your recording without spilling from an open pair of cans while recording say an acoustic, then any half decent pair of closed backs will do. When it comes to mixing with "cans" you now need some good quality open-backed headphones. I have a number of H/Phones Beyer Pro 770's,(Closed Back) Senheisser HD 25's (the DJ's favourite closed back) and my Sunday best ones Senheisser HD 650's (Open Backed) which I do 99% of my tracking/mixing with. So it really is a case of "pays yer money take yer choice ) i'm afraid. I would say buy a decent pair they will do you good service once "broken in).
Mike.

I prefer the closed back h/phones and Beyer 770 Pro are my favourite.
I can't think of a better Headphone at the moment.
As Mike said the Sennheiser HD650 phones are excellent but i prefer closed back.

Hi Phil I,m no DJ (lol) and just want phones that'll give me what I hear out of my monitors. I have no "colour" on the Output so Bass heavy phones will not be representative. These old Sony's have been good but headset is now falling to bits. HTH Ian

As an afterthought I would highly recommend the Beyer Pro 770's as a good all round set of cans that are not expensive, and will do all you need.

Ian,I use the Beyer 770 Pro headphones and can recommend them.
They are closed back phones that do not colour the sound, comfy to wear and not at a stupid price.
You get what you pay for and they really are excellent. If you buy from Amazon you get to try them and send them back if you don't like them.

Ian, if you are tempted get the 250 ohm's as they are compatible for most of the gear used by us.

Phil Although I already have several headphones and so don't really need any more, I was so impressed by the spec, the price and the favourable reviews, that I had a touch of G.A.S. and sent off for these ATH-M50s. I'm now in the doghouse (thanks!) but hopefully will be a lot happier. As you say, you get what you pay for, so probably the others suggested in this thread will be a lot better, but the OP asked for "budget" and with a flat response. These Audio Technicas seem to meet that requirement perfectly. Cheers Keith

Hi Kieth,
Rest assured, the other headphones will not sound better, I have been using the M50's for about four years, as I mentioned they used to be £150 they are still around £130 in some places.
All my mixes are done with studio monitors but I use the M50's for reference, they are great!

Hi guys I wanted flat response (not compromised by souped up Bass etc) so that my mixdowns, primarily always done on monitors so it represents what 'the public' hear, can be checked on headphones for those who use iPads, walkmans etc or whose family want some peace and quiet. Lol! Looks like the Audio Technical for me. Thanks for all the info, guys Just as an aside, why would £20 headphones NOT be worth considering? Ian

"Just as an aside, why would £20 headphones NOT be worth considering?" Well I would consider them if I was a Hip-hop DJ Phil

Oh Dear...
I would class cans in the region of less than £50 as budget, I use Sennie HD 201 for general purpose listening on the pc/effects pedal etc.... I do have a set of "good" Sennies for the odd time nowadays that I sit down & listen to music from a decent source (sadly, all cd's these days)
I certainly wouldn't dismiss £20 can's without listening to them, some of these can be surprisingly good.
Dick.

I bought a pair of shure srh840's about 2 year ago, I think they were around £150 at the time, they're great for late night guitar when you don't want to use monitors. they also keep noise out which is great for whenever the wifes home.
edit: it's not just the sound quality you're paying for. I can sit for hours playing guitar and forget that i'm even wearing these headphones. with others I've had, 20 mins is all I could stand without my ears going numb.
