.....Tonight BBC4 @ 9.00 p.m.
DURATION: 1 HOUR The guitar riff is the DNA of rock 'n' roll, a double helix of repetitive simplicity and fiendish complexity on which its history has been built. From Chuck Berry through to the White Stripes, this documentary traces the ebb and flow of the guitar riff over the last 60 years of popular music. With riffs and stories from an all-star cast including Brian May, Dave Davies, Hank Marvin, Joan Jett, Nile Rodgers, Tony Iommi, Robert Fripp, Johnny Marr, Nancy Wilson, Kevin Shields, Ryan Jarman, Tom Morello and many more. Narrated by Lauren Laverne. SHOW LESS

I am looking forward to this but, I hope they are not going to spew out the tired old riffs that have become clichés. My interest would be to see and hear how these guys come up with new and innovative riffs and phrases.

Overall disappointed..............just a handful of great riffs and a lot of wandering around into various ways the guitar has been used in modern music..........Nothing from the Beatles? ?(E.g Paperback writer) and only the odd nod to the Stones(Keith Richard must surely have come up with many more memorable riffs than Johnny Marr and the Smiths for crysake ) I don't think the producers really got a handle on what a riff is. I've covered Johnny B Goode at many gigs over the past 50 years and love Chuck's music but I wouldn't call his intro a riff. This was amply illustrated by several different versions played by Joe Brown, Brian May etc. To me a riff is a musical motif that everyone would play note for note. Baz

Absolutely Baz. A complete waste of an hour for me. As you say, no George Harrison/Knopfler/Perkins etc, etc, I could name many more that deserved mention. I hope the rest of the series is a lot better than that.

Someone who knows very little or, nothing about guitar. Scotty Moore/Carl Perkins/Chet Atkins are all probably names the guys(or gal) has never heard of.

From the lack of posts on this topic, it would seem that few UK members actually watched this programme Seems odd given the subject matter and the inclusion of both Hank and Bruce . Baz

Hi,
Watched "The Joy of the Guitar Riff" for 15 minutes then it suddenly became "The Pain of the Tuneless Rubbish". I'm willing to listen to any style of music, but I always believed that to be music it must have some kind of melody. Then perhaps I'm just getting old :-(
Cheers
Ian

My idea of jazz that I can listen to is The Great American Song book type of music. Sinatra, Tony Bennett. You can keep the experimental and weird stuff that passes for music.

The programme producers possibly think they are being 'cutting edge'?--But what a load of old cr*p--is this what we are condemned to pay a TV license for? --Shame on the BBC!!--as inaccurate, inadequate and uninteresting a comment as I've ever seen, seemingly cobbled together by a bunch of overpaid out of touch luvvies--what a disappointment!! Regards David
