Has anyone tried the G&L Legacy for Shadows music ? The Legacy guitar was designed by Leo Fender after the S500 guitar when he and George Fullerton formed the company in the 80s. It has a number of refinements over the original Strat. The tremolo is 2 point floating fulcrum design. The fretboard is 12inch radius generally. Pickups are based on a mid 60s strat wound to about 6.5k to 7k. The woods are the usual alder and maple / rosewood but also swamp ash on some finishes. The USA models get a PLEK setup as standard. The most interesting part of Leo's design for me is the PTB tone circuit which is a vast improvement on the standard strat tone controls and works like a Low pass / High pass circuit. Using the bass you can roll off the bass in a similar way to a high pass filter and the trebles in a way similar to a low pass filter. A great improvement on the tone circuit of the original strat. There are also quality cheaper models made in Indonesia which have mostly the same PUs and hardware, but with basswood bodies and swamp ash on some finishes. details on their site www.glguitars.com/instruments/USA/guitars/legacy/index.aspComparison of the S500 and Legacy

I have details of the PTB tone circuit if anyone is interested and it looks like it could be wired into a standard strat.

ive had a look at the wiring , and it seems that its basically a TBX control but the 2 pots are split up into separate controls

Okay then in view of the interest here is a link to a folder with details. Please note the Legacy and the S500 circuits are both in the folder and are slightly different. Also the S500 has a toggle switch to bring the bridge in depending on 5 way switch position. Bear in mind one of the pots is a 1meg value linear (for bass cut) app.box.com/s/fjbtr13oa9amuhz4vzzgHad to revise the info on the file about pots.txt after seeing further info on the G&L site as the 1 Meg pot is a reverse audio taper not Linear as another site suggested. Also the pots and parts they sell for Tribute and USA series will differ such as the pots and knobs. HTH

I used to have a G&L Commanche the pickups were very trebly but the guitar was superb.
If i was to get another it would be the S500,i think it has a sweeter tone.
Just my opinion, but all G&L guitars are excellent.

A few years ago now I actually did a comparison in a London guitar shop [not specifically for a Shads sound] with a G&L,standard, [Strat lay out] and an Ernie Ball Silhouette, both roughly the same price, I have to be honest and say I preferred the Ernie Ball for neck playability and sound. This is not to say the G&L is no good far from it, its a great guitar but I just preferred the EB.

Think I am going to buy myself a G&L Legacy as I am convinced it will be a great guitar . Just need to raise some cash.

Have been looking for some time at the G&L range and also assess it as a very good guitar. And also to do some credit to the great Leo Fender. Same Problem as roger will have to try the two Versions out first, and then decide, after having raised the necessary cash. Shadowkarl

I now own the S500 and I rate it the best and most versatile strat I have ever owned. The Shadows tones both vintage and new are possible with the guitar due to the tone circuits and PUs. Dave Robbo Robinson has got a S500 and states it is very flexible in tone and use and although the Legacy seems to be the obvious choice I would recommend the S500 after trying them both out. Happy user here ! There is also a sound example in Sound Files Section for Peace Pipe by the way. Peace Pipe G&L S500 Strat Live

I own both, a Legacy I bought anew in 2012 and a S500 Tribute from 2001 (the cheap Asian series) which I bought second hand, and I'm more than happy with both of them. Here's a recording with the Legacy ( Legacy), and here I recorded my S500 ( S500).

Hi Roger,
Quite frankly, in my humble opinion those G&L guitars sound more "stratish" than many original Custom Shop Stratocasters twice to six times as expensive. My Legacy was € 1,150, the S500 only € 320. So all things considered, I'd go with G&L any time.

Joachim

I have to agree there I have 3 strats and an S500 and I am firmly in favour of the S500 after using it for about 3 weeks or so. Others have got them on my recommendation and say the same they play better than a strat and the sound is more easy to shape with he PTB tone controls.

Hi Roger regards to the G@L. I have the Legacy. and have to say its the best Guitar I have. I also own. 3 Fender strats one of which is custom ordered Clapton one. however as far as comparisons go, the G@L is by Far the better of them all. better made in all departments. for me its a No contest. Quality is simply superb. I have a number of tracks/videos on youtube using it. regards Lou

Can any one tell me what neck profile, nut width and string spacing at bridge the S500 [budget model] has and fret size, also the neck playability compared to say to a similar spec Fender Strat.

They can vary in finish depending but are generally the same as the USA basic neck first on this list. Mine is a light maple wood smooth satin finish 12" radius my mates is vintage style finish gloss and both great to hold and play. Frets are Med Jumbo. Neck Profiles USA Models

No Alan it is an Indonesian S500 and a great well made guitar. I know severalnow have bought the Indonesian mdel and been totally happy with the guitars. Many USA parts including the PUs are on it and I am told the woods used are from same sources as USA models, but not too sure on that. The build quality on mine is excellent and the neck is wonderful and easy to play and the natural ash body looks very nicely matched in two pieces. The S500 is normally made with a mahogany body in the Indonesian models but a special run were done in ash for a while. My mate has a mahogany body and it sounds great.

For info Dave Robinson has done some A/B tests using an S500 , a Burns Marvin and a Strat into a Vox AC4 with Catlinbread Echorec pedal miked with an AKG mic and he says there is very little difference in the sounds when EQ is applied and the tone controls on the S500 are adjusted. He turned the bass right down and a little bit off the treble side to get a near match he said. So the S500 really is a Shads guitar !

Thanks Roger
I have always liked the S500 but I thought it had to be a USA model to sound as good as this.
