The thing which caught my attention is in Part 1 (8.24).
It's usually obvious if someone is playing in octaves but I would never have guessed Hank played the section referred to in octaves....and I still can't hear it from the recording. Also, I've never seen it transcribed as such.
Must be disguised by the echo?
Will have to check out videos to look for his LH shape.....am beginning to imagine it already.
Oh well something else to practice.....talk about never stop learning....

Jay, no worries... Hank didn't play octave on the original recording. He started to do that on this part of the tune, occasionally in the 70's and does it always from the 80's on till now. It's easy to do,but I always have to think about it,if will use it or not every time I come to this part of the tune... why... well it depends if there are a lot of transporters in the audience or just music/guitar lovers.

......well no wonder I couldn't hear it.
I'm only interested in the early stuff anyway so I'm not going to bother.
I thought he was talking about improvising in the studio in the early days?

......just had another listen to the interview and LH asks Hank:-
'How much did you improvise on the early recordings?'
Hank then specifically mentions Apache and the octave ending. So it seems clear to me that he did do this in the studio when recording Apache.
Perhaps it exists in an unreleased version of the tune?

Hi Steve,
Hank has made that mistake a couple of times. I fitted various pickups (including 57/62's and CS54's) to one of his guitars before he settled on the CS54's and subsequently had them fitted to his other two Strats. I guess he got a bit confused about the pickup identity during all the testing.
Regards,
paul.
