Hi Roger I hope you are keeping well.
I am using Newtone Electric Masters 12-52 with a wound (24) third. As my arthritis doesn't permit much string bending, so I tend to use the trem arm instead
Strangely, the only "complaint" I have with the strings is with the 1st (top E) which sounds extremely thin in comparison to the D'Addario 12-52s I used previously. I have obtained a much better tone on 1st by replacing the Newtone string with a single D'Addario 13, resulting in a fuller more mellow sound when playing on 1st.
Cheers
Richard

Hi Richard,
I'm very well thank you and I do hope that you are too.
My fingers couldn't get anywhere near 12's but agree with you that they have a very nice sound. It's funny isn't it how we get hang-ups about certain strings, whether it be the sound or the feel. I too have experimented from time to time by buying single strings of different types and 'slotting them in' so to speak. Once I had a hang-up about certain strings being louder than others. It took me weeks to get over that one.
Kind regards Roger

Hi Roger,
The next time you see that luthier, remind him that the stratocaster was designed when the standard gauge strings on delivery where 13-56... Beside that there are not a lot pre-cbs known with replacment necks because of the strings are to heavy... To top it off... my genuine aug 58 strat has for the last 25 years 14-17-32-42-52-62 string gauge on it's maple neck without any problem and it's still not like a bow and arrow and it's not warped at all. My 57 and both 60 slapboard strats have 11-52 on it for 30 years or longer... all my strats except the fiesta red 58 have 11-52 on and they play fine and still the necks are fine... So does Hanks guitars, the ones that are in use with heavier strings... So that reputed luthier would not be on the top of my list... Cheers Rob

Hi Rob,
The Luthier concerned is very well respected. Not only by amateurs but he also looks after the guitars for many of the well known professionals in the industry. He was the manager of a guitar manufacturers for some years before setting up as a professional Luthier for the past 20 years. I trust his judgment as do others. I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that there are many thousands of guitars from those early days that are absolutely fine and have no bends or twists in them at all. What I don't know is how many others did have problems. The Luthier guy is probably better placed than I to know that. I think his advice is valid. His point as I read it is that all strings have different tensions no matter how matched they are. Therefore with a very high tension on the front side of a piece of wood has got to create uneven strains. All he is advising is that with the long thin necks of Stratocasters it is better to keep that tension to a minimum. I know that Fender shipped Stratocasters back in the early days with heavy gauge strings. Maybe they had little choice, but nowadays I believe most of them are shipped with 9-42's. It makes sense to me.
Kind regards Roger

Hi Rich,
That's ok. Give the 11-49's a go. You may find that they suit you better and you prefer them. I was delighted when I first put my 11-49's on. It was just that after a couple of days of playing them I started to get a niggling feeling that perhaps I did really prefer the 10-46's. That feeling grew and grew on me so I changed back again. I'm ok now, I've got it out of my system. The pain of it all was that I had to set up all the guitar settings twice.
Best wishes with your try-out.
Kind regards Roger
