Hi All, I've been wanting for a while now to make a recording playing all the parts myself, rather than using BT's. I thought I'd try Walk Don't Run as this was the first tune I played on stage at a youth club concert when I was about 14, a long time ago!
I've got the drum track down using a Zoom RhythmTrak 234 and the bass using a Westfield JB copy. Can anyone help with getting the lead and rhythm sounds please? It sounds to me that only reverb is used on the lead, I can't detect an echo. I've tried three different strats and various settings on my Zoom G7.1ut with EFTP but can't quite nail it. I see from early videos, all mimed, that the lead is played on a Jazzmaster and rhythm on a strat but don't know what was used for the original recording.
I've got the G7 connected direct into the computer, via a Lexicon Alpha interface and recording using Cubase LE6 and would add that I'm still a bit of a novice at home recording and learning the dedication and concentration it requires!
I would very much appreciate any comments regarding reverb/echo, EQ, etc, settings to try and recreate this early guitar sound.
Thanks in anticipation,
John

Hi John, I always thought the rhythm was a Strat and the lead was a Jazzmaster, and still do. Probably the middle pickup on the Strat and both pickups (middle position) on the Jazzmaster. You will have a hard time getting the lead sound with a Strat but if you try, use the middle pickup and then remove quite a lot of mids around 500Hz to 800Hz to make it sound more hollow like the original. I played it live on a Strat with the middle pickup and it sounded OK but not quite as hollow. There is a small amount of slap echo on the lead. Try something around 130ms. Maybe also a small amount of small (short decay, less than 1 second) room reverb. Probably no effects on the rhythm. Regards, Charlie

Didn't the Ventures use Mosrite guitars?.... vid on Utube from '64 and that appears to be the case..... would explain why Fenders don't sound right....

Hi Charlie, Thanks for your prompt response. Yes, difficult to emulate a Jazzmaster sound on a Strat! I had tried EFTP settings EC Baby1 and 2 on my G7 as a starting point but I will try again from scratch using your suggestions and see how I get on. I really appreciate your help. Regards John

Hi Tubetonetim, Thanks for your post. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think The Ventures changed to Mosrite in 1963 up until then they used Fenders, Walk Don't Run was released in 1960 so the lead would have been played on a Jazzmaster. Cheers John

Hi tubetonetim, The Ventures didn't use Mosrite guitars as early as 1960 when their original version Walk Don't Run was recorded. I remember the switch to Mosrites later on. This video is mimed but shows the Fenders they almost certainly used on the recording. www.youtube.com/watch?v=owq7hgzna3EHi John, EC Baby 2 should be close to what you want. Regards, Charlie

The Ventures released their version, of guitarist Johnny Smith`s tune, as a single in 1960, using Fender guitars. The band would later record the song in 1964, Walk Don`t Run `64, using Mosrite guitars. Quote :"They would become the first band to score two top ten hits with two versions of the same song"

Hi Charlie, That's the video I've been watching, I think The Shadows certainly had the 'choreography' sewn up!!
I've built a patch from scratch on the G7 with the settings you suggested and it's getting there, now going back to tweek EC Baby 2 to see if I can improve on it. Middle pick up is better.
Thanks again for your help. Regards John

That's interesting Alisap, I remember nearly wearing the original 1960 record out along with Apache! Cheers John

Hi Charlie, I've tweaked EC Baby 2 and come up with, I think, a reasonable sound. I am about to post the end result in Sound Files Members Only and will be pleased to hear any comments. Thanks again for your input.
I would also like to thank you for all the time and effort you put into this site Charlie and for the pleasure we have all got from EFTP. Very best of luck with the new Hall Collins unit, I'm sure it will be a great success.
Regards John
