Hi Charlie and indeed all, I play generally through EFTP on a (registered!) Q2, and am champing at the bit for a Hall & Collins unit in a few weeks time; but a very close friend (another EFTP-aholic) is going to sell me his pristine Zoom G7iut with (registered!) EFTP at a very kindly price indeed. I'm going to buy it from him for for the following specific reason:- I intend to use this for practice when away from home, in my caravan, with headphones. Presumably I should select an amp sim - say VX Clean, and switch on the 'Cab' emulation for best results?? Maybe there are other knobs I should adjust too? Perhaps it's not quite as simple as that on an EFTP G7?? I don't know. I MOST DEFINITELY will NOT be "saving/storing" any of my changes; just adjusting 'knobs' each time I use the unit. A faff, I agree, but I have a paranoid fear of accidentally "mucking up" my EFTP units. I have 3 already. (all legit!) . Charlie has reassured us all, of course, that the forthcoming H&C unit can't be 'mucked up' because the programs are 'permanently-burnt-in'! Thank goodness! My new H&C unit will be reserved for home use, and for playing live through a Vox AC15 C1X, miked up with an SM57. Any tips on this headphones malarkey with the G7 would be GRATEFULLY appreciated! Thanks in advance, Charlie and all. Always expert, sensible advice on Charlie's site! Kindest regards, Milko

Hi Milko, The Vox amp modelling on the G7, and most of the other Zoom G series pedals, is excessively bright. I tried to compensate for this with the G7 EQ settings but there is only so much that can be done without destroying the core tone. For this reason I recommend turning down the treble on the amp, but with headphones you won't be able to do that. It might be acceptable if you can live with the brighter sound. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie, Many thanks for your speedy response and helpful advice. I'll juggle with the parameters you suggest, temporarily, each time I use it for headphone practice away from home. It won't be perfect, but it will suffice for the purpose, hopefully. Again, your expertise, freely shared, much appreciated! Kindest regards, Milko

HI Milko, Sorry to jump in on your post but I also play a G7 through headphones quite a bit and find that nearly all the EFTP patches sound better on the B channel, this has no amp sim or eq and sounds very close to my ears as it does live through my amp.Its worth trying just press the channel A/B function button the light goes red or green.

Hi Grottyshep, Many thanks for that idea. I must admit, it probably wouldn't have occurred to me to try that particular trick, but I shall do so after your post! Great intel to possess! Milko As a postscript to my original posting, a few of you may be wondering what guitar I use in my holiday touring caravan, space and weight being obviously at a premium. It's a Traveler Pro take apart solid wood guitar. Electric, with a single coil pup, and a piezo near the bridge, for an accoustic sound. You can blend the two pups with two gold knobs. It's an exceptional piece of craftsmanship, and looks extremely cool, let alone playing very well indeed. But it also has another trick! Also mounted under the bridge, is the diaphragm of a Doctor's stethoscope. A metal spigot on the side of the guitar allows the stethoscope tubing to be pushed on. Then if you listen through the stethoscope earpieces, you hear the guitar very well as an acoustic! It's every bit as ingenious as the description. Sadly, there's no tremolo bridge, but for practising, it's brilliant! There isn't room for a trem anyway. Rather compact in that area, to say the least! The headless neck is full size, and the guitar assembles as a skeleton frame in about 45 seconds. I've played it though a Pod 2 in my caravan so far, but. I shall now play through the G7. I bought the guitar s/h for about £250 many years ago. I had heard about this particular Pro model of the Traveler guitar, but this is the only one I have ever seen. I've been offered several times the money I paid for it, but it's so cool, I'm not parting! Milko

Hi y'all! Further to my last post, I've discovered a neat attribute of the Zoom G7.1ut. It's got an AUX IN socket, proper impedance, which means you can play a backing track into the G7, and play along to it. The output could go to a guitar amp, I suppose, but my reason for using the G7 is headphone practice, so this AUX input is ideal. I'm just going to use my iPod or my portable CD player, loaded with BTs. The two volume levels adjustable at source, of course. I think there's an AUX socket on the G9 as well, but I'm not sure about the latest ZOOMS. I know from earlier helpful posts on this thread that the EQ might be a bit of a compromise, but for 'silent' practice, this will be perfectly acceptable. Brilliant in fact! It's perhaps a good reason for those of you planning to offload G7s or 9s to hang onto them for this very reason! Kindest regards, Milko

The G9 does also have an aux in, I used to play backing tracks from my 7 inch android tablet into it but the G5 and, I assume the smaller but similar G3, does not have it either. It seems a backward step from Zoom as it surely couldn't have cost that much to put one in.
The Zoom FAQs page says this :
Not very good for you using the headphones as you suggested, unless you could connect the later Zooms to your iPad via uSB or use the Zoom.s USB to the Ipad into a DAW which had a backing track in then use headphones connecte dto that to listen to.
As you say the G7 and G9 are ideal for what you are wanting to do.

Hi Sandra, Thanks for your comments. I'm waiting for Charlie's new Hall and Collins machine, like many others, and so my G7.1ut aquisition, is simply for headphone practice. The USB fandango would just add to the complications, but it's a very sound idea, pardon the pun. Thanks for that! I've got to be honest, the G7 is now my fourth EFTP machine, including a Q2, so I guess there's a bit of G.A.S. going on there, but my mates spend as much on alcohol, whilst I'm teetotal and non smoking, so that's my justification for the expense! Once again, Thanks for your interest, Kindest regards, Milko
