Hello, I'm now thinking of buying a Vox AC15 and wondered if it worth paying more to get the model with the Alnico Blue speaker. If anyone has any experience of these or the new AC10, their comments would be appreciated. Thanks, Derek B.

Hi Derek, I have a VOX AC15 for sale if interested. It is an all valve 'Made in England' not China.

Hi Derek B! I have a Vox AC15C1 retro fitted with a Vox Alnico Blue; the speaker made in England, supplied by Celestion's retailer Lean Business of Ipswich. It sounds totally authentic, in fact amazing. I never heard it with its original Greenback, because I bought it very, very low mileage, barely run in, at a very, very reasonable price, from an extremely kind close friend who'd retro fitted the speaker. Would a Chinese version of the speaker, which is fitted in the AC15C1X sound exactly similar? I suspect so, because Celestion will have specced the heck out of it for the Chinese factory. They're a great firm, and the factory should work to that spec exactly. But retro fitting a new English Blue to an AC15C1 is a route only a few pounds dearer, and you've still got the original Greenback. My advice is that if you can afford the Vox AC15C1 plus a separate English Blue speaker; go buy them. You can always sell the Greenback, or house it in a cabinet for your own alternative use. That's a better option than buying the C1X in my humble opinion. Or do it in stages. AC15 C1 for a birthday present, and the Blue from Lean Business for an unbirthday present? But in the final analysis, it's YOUR ears, buddy! Why not cruise down to a proper Vox dealer, with your own Shadows Echo unit under your arm, and try both versions - and then some other suitable amps. You'll end up with exactly what sounds the business to you. Or not; continuing to suffer with that dreadful affliction G.A.S. which has claimed most of us on this fantastic forum! All the best Derek, Kindest regards, Milko

Talking from experience, I wouldn't have an AC-15 or AC-30 in the house to play through. I have two AC 30s and once owned a Vox Heretage AC-15 and you can't drive them to the the tone required without being too loud. The AC-30s are fo gigs only, I bought an AC-4 and never looked back, a lot less expensive too. Even better value if you don't want 'loud' is the little Vox Mini 3 or Mini 5. I'm doing some more H&C demos with mine tomorrow so check it out when I post them. They are plenty loud enough for playing indoors with BTs, it's how I practice for gigs, I am selling a Vox VT-80 I recently bought because the smaller amp is better for the job. Of course if you are doubling up gigging the that's a different angle, but I imagined you were playing at home. As for the speakers, blue or otherwise, one of my Voxes had two blues, the other has two Jensens, each of them sounds great and can't be told apart. Best of luck anyway.

Try a Weber Ceramic Blue Dog, Knocks spots of the Celestion.
Classic Vox Tone with ceramic punch 12", 40oz Ceramic magnet, 15, 30, 50, 75, or 100 watts, 1-3/4" voice coil, ribbed cone. Detailed high end that doesn't get hard or harsh at high volumes, aggressive, big low end, more headroom than the Celestion Alnico Blue.

Hello, I'm now thinking of buying a Vox AC15 and wondered if it worth paying more to get the model with the Alnico Blue speaker. Some years ago, I listened to a comparative test between Alnico Blue and Greenback speakers, and the difference in tone was very slim, but the difference in price is not slim ! Anyhow you can always start with a Greenback one, and later upgrade it to the Blue Alnico if you really feel the need for it. Keep in mind also that the Blue Alnico is a little louder than the Greenback. Didier

Derek, If your determent to own a AC15 you might look into a second-hand AC15H1TV they sound the biz with the alnico blue they came with. I have one and for the old sounds it's great with the EF86 channel.
