Apologies if this has been asked before but the search doesn't return what i expect, but please give me a chance i had a stroke 10 weeks ago so my mind is a bit slow xx
Basically i'm wanting to change the strings on my Squier By fender Strat , I am playing the early stuff like wonderful land etc, I have been told the heavy gauge like 10's but do you guys have any preference over make or string type etc and gauge for the early shads stuff ?
Thanks for your time guys appreciated

Hi Paul, The thicker the better for Hanks early sounds, 10's are a good starting place if you're used to light gauge strings. Bear in mind that you should be taking it easy As for string make, it's all down to personal preference, I use D'Addario EJ20 Jazz Extra Light with a wound 3rd string on some guitars and on others I use the D'Addario EXL115 Blues/Jazz Rock 11's with a plain 3rd string. The Strat I'm using most at the minure is fitted with D'Addario EXL116 MediumTop/Heavy Bottom, and I've changed the plain 3rd for a .024" wire wound...and these hurt on bends. A number of members here use the Elixir Nanoweb which are a dearer string but I've not read any negative reports about them and they do seem to give a longer life. Kind regards, Chris

Thanks Chris i think the strings are original one's so not sure of gauge lol.
I am taking it easy mate but my mind is full of what's happened over the last 10 weeks, i have managed to nearly recover on my right side etc, i just want to focus on something other than the stroke if you get me, i'm only 49 (only he says lol) Although i had a full blown stroke it was light in comparison. So enough about that its shads all the way lol.
Thanks for your reply mate its appreciated.

Hi Paul,
If you are changing to heavier strings you will need to carry out some "set up" procedures to prevent fret buzz and get reasonable use of the tremolo. The truss rod will require adjustment (google it for "how to's") and you will need to change the spring tension under the backplate of your strat to make the tremolo usable....you may also feel the need to add an extra spring.
Kind regards,
Chris

Hi Paul, I think I can safely say on behalf of all members and myself we wish you a quick and full recovery.
Regarding your proposed change to heavier strings, if you tell us where you are located (myself if not to far away) or another member I'm sure would be happy to help you with setting up your guitar if your not sure what to do.

I have found that D'Addario strings are harder in tension than certain others makes of the same gauge and if you are weakened through illness as I was they are more difficult to play. EG the equivalent gauge in Ernie Ball or Gibson always feel 'softer'. I used D'Addarios on a regular basis before my illness but have momentary settled for 9/46 Gibsons and Ernie Ball as a successful compromise. It isn't noticeable on the plain strings but I have a feeling that the wound strings may have heavier gauge cores which would explain why they are 'harder' on the D'Addario sets. After I finished my treatment for cancer in July last year, I treat myself to a new Martin 000M guitar which came with 12/56 strings as standard. My hands were so weak that I struggled to finger the notes cleanly and replaced the strings with as set of light gauge 10/46 of the same brand. What a difference it made to my fingering and although the neck has a very low action, the lower tension was the difference in being able to play, or not play. I only mention this because I read you have suffered a stroke and it will make a difference if your hands are weak. I visit York on a weekly basis as we have relatives there, so if you need help with your set up, let me know and I can help you, we usually come over on a Wednesday and I often go up to Clifton Moor and have a walk around Gear4 Music. Don't hesitate to ask if you need help.

Hi Paul
I had a stroke last July , I had trouble using my hands for some time afterwards . The last thing I contemplated to start with was thicker strings , I found practice the best way forward practising the same songs over and over and gradually I got my strength back in my hands. All the best with your recovery .

Hi Paul,
I know this is an old post & I trust that you are making progress in your recovery.
I'm a big fan of Pyramid strings (except for my Double 6 which is wearing a set of PRS. (010 - 046))
I find the Pyramid's appear to have less tension than other makes I have tried and they give a good range of base through to the treble. (IMO). Also I seem to be able to change from 10/46 to 11/50's without set up issues.
Slightly more expensive but not overly so.
I use Pyramid Nickel Classics on the: Apache & Washburn HB30 semi(011 - 050)and Pyramid Superior Quality Pure Nickel on the Hagstrom Deuce,(solid mahogany body HB P/U's), (010 - 046)
Worth a try perhaps.
Regards
Darryl

... I'm a big fan of Pyramid strings ... Hi Paul, I'll second that! Pyramid strings are the best I've ever used. I only use them on all of my guitars and basses. They also have superb flatwounds and you can have custom made strings according to your wishes. Very, very long durability. By all means recommendable! Regards, Bernie

I had a chat with Colin from the rapiers last weekend and he uses 13 pyramid flatwounds the vintage set, I may have to try them just for the hell of it, he believes they are a key part of the tone.
