HI TO ALL ,I have just listend to pauls version of ''ATLANTIS'' [tvs site] it is so good on the muted parts very clean &defined & this I feel is the hardest sound to get right, this to meit is thesound that has captivated me all those years ago,,''ie'' piece pipe, the girls ,etc ,etc ,paul's sound is in my opinion rates up there with peter-korvings& that is the best rendition I have heard so far a real achievment for both of them using different types of equippment, there is nothing like enhancing that sound over the original & they have in my opinion have done that..CHEERS aussie barry..

Fred,
I am told by Spike that Paul used the original Shadows recordings and 'removed' Hank electronically using a feature of Cool Edit Pro (or Adobe Audition as it has now become).
I asked whether it would be possible to get hold of copies, but because they are using them to promote the TVS, they won't release them.
I have just got a copy of Adobe Audition 1.5 and haven't yet found a successful way to replicate what Spike and Co have done.
If anyone out there has achieved it, would you mind sharing what settings you used please?
Geoff

The basic way to remove the centre instruments of a stereo image is to reverse the phase of one of the stereo pair of tracks and balance the 2 tracks to cancel completely the exact point in the image. A plug in may be required for this. The result would have to be a mono track so mixdown of the stereo pair must be in mono. Leaving it in stereo would not cancel the required parts.
This process is not very effective with modern stereo mixes because the bass and some drums (usually at least the bass drum) are usually in the centre of the mix, therefore the process would also cancel out these parts, unless EQ is introduced to unbalance the bass below say around 80Hz (for example to boost the bass on one track and reduce it on the other) so that bass frequencies are not cancelled, while leaving higher frequencies alone. It works well on the early stereo mixes because usually the backing instruments are panned left and right, with the main instrument in the centre.
I have heard of a more effective system that can do it better but I don't have any useful information.
Regards,
Charlie

Hi Geoff
When I removed Hank from the original, it not only took out Hank but also most of the string and rhythm section. At this stage it was a useless BT. Gary had to put back a lot via his software which included the strings and triangles. Paul added a bit more bass also. It took ages to complete. We found that for Atlantis, I could remove Hank more so than others because of the different versions of that track.
What I'm saying is that it depends on the version of Atlantis you have, that may allow you to remove Hank and not leave any traces. This however comes at a cost of losing most of the track, so it needs to be compensated for what was taken out. Its not easy. On some shads tracks I cant do it and thus go to UB Hank.
The reason we dont give out this track is because it may end up on the well known auction site.
BTW: Thanks Charlie for your support on Paul's sound file. Your comments are highly respected.
