Thanks Phil for posting this. I think most if not all of us would pay thanks to The Rapiers for there great music and keeping alive the Shadows tunes which is also a great outstanding compliment to there guitar playing.

Hi Phil
I'm working my way through the set but have to say you've done a great job capturing The Rapiers who put on a terrific show. I know you had issues on the day but it would of been good to see the other acts. I think Tasty's set would of been good to see again. I can't imagine how much work has gone into editing and uploading the videos but the end result is well worth it, very well done.

Thanks guys for your replies - Yes I tried to set up on the balcony where I have video'd many of the Shadowmania's but the sound guy told me I was in his way and plugging into their power sockets would be stealing electricity !.Also I had to get permission from each band to video them. I knew I was OK with The Rapiers as I know them so kept my video batteries for their set and found a spot downstairs.Sorry I haven't got footage from the rest of the show.
Cheers Phil

Hi Pete - Yes I was a bit surprised at his comment I think he got out of bed on the wrong side :-)
Hi Brian - I agree with your comment - for the early 1960's sound they have got it nailed - It sounds even more authentic since they started using pyramid vintage gold flat wound strings.I believe colin uses 13-56 ! I wouldn't fancy bending those! Lol.
Hi Roger - Yes good to see you to at Lakeside and glad you liked the video's.
All the best... Phil

Phil, Thank you for posting the videos. Really enjoyed a great performance and wonderful sound from the Rapiers. BTW, can anyone advise what type of pickups CPJ has in his Stratocaster? Cheers, JB

Hi jb I spoke with Colin at some length about his setup at lakeside. His guitar just has the standard pickups it came with.

Hello Phil. Just as a matter of interest, can you tell me which model of the Fender Stratocaster guitar they are using?
Thanks. Tuffty.

Hi Tuffty, Colin Pryce-Jones uses a Fender Fullerton Stratocaster re-issue 62. He purchased it in the 80s brand new and it has not changed in any way. These models were hand made up until 1984 when they moved to the Corona factory. I think Colins' is a 1984 model. They are identical to the original 62 in shape, weight, neck gauge and how the pick-ups were wound. they are getting pretty expensive nowadays for an early model. He uses 13-56 flatwound strings!!!!
Hope this helps.

Not so sure that early 80s reissues are as accurate as we would like to think, for example the 12th fret position marker dots are closer together on earlier US production reissue models. However, I found this thread about reissues interesting because much of what is said reinforces what I had already come to believe: www.fenderforum.com/forum.html?db=&topic_number=755293Generally the thinking is that the early 80s US vintage reissue pickups sound thinner than original 62 pickups. I had fitted an early 80s US reissue set to my original 62 Strat for a short time as I was never happy with the sound of the original pickups which never had a nice high end to them. Although the windings had a strange black varnish on them (which 62 pickups definitely did not have) I thought it sounded quite good until I took it to show a dealer friend whose opinion I trust, who said it didn't sound like a 62. I took them off after that and sold them and haven't looked back. Regards, Charlie

Re Charlie's post on the 62 RI pickups, I've got a 1988 62 RI (so probably from Corona factory) and the pickups on that were definitely wound with 42 AWG Plain Enamel wire (dark brown/purple colour) which was definitely not what was originally used on a 62 Strat) - back then they used Formvar insulated wire which is a dark gold colour. I've put those pickups to one side and fitted a set of my own vintage spec Strat pickups. Regards, John
