Hi All
This tune has always been one of my favourites and I believe one of Hanks as well,so I started learning it but the sound of the 1963 version is nothing like the live version on stage. The live one Hank plays it with the bridge pick up,i. always thought the original was played from middle pick up.Any views on this.
Regards Peter

Hi Peter, I think you may be right. There seems to be any number of pickup combinations, except for the bridge pickup, on the original. To further complicate things, there is at least one overdub where notes overlap near the end of the tune. Regards, Charlie

I believe the original is neck pickup for intro then bridge for main. Neck pickup for next muted part then bridge for rest of the song but as Charlie said there is different takes joined together and the echo is different throughout

Hi Steve, That's what I thought for a long time, mainly because that is what Hank does live, until I listened more closely to the original, now I don't really think the verses are the bridge pickup. There is a lack of bass, a bit like a bridge pickup sound, but there is also a hollowness to the sound that doesn't sound much like a bridge pickup. Maybe it was a mix of bridge and neck? I read somewhere that Hank had some Strats wired to give that combination in the early 60s, whether it is true or not I don't know, but it should perhaps be considered here. Regards, Charlie

Hi, I get very close to the original sound using the bridge pickup for the main melody and the neck for the intro/outro, as shown in the demo on www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7fJnNa2m0g&feature=youtu.be A major contribution to the tone comes from the Top Boost channel with the bass and treble controls nearly fully on, with the top end calmed a bit with the Cut control. Some compression then completes the picture, Regards, Paul.

Almost a year ago this topic was on this site also, this is what I wrote:
Hank told me more then 30 years ago a nice eye-opener... He told me that on some occasions there was a certain singer that had nothing better to do and he was sitting on the floor and after a nod of Hank, that singer did the switch for Hank. Not only on the guitar but also occasionally on a echo or something similar... That only happen very sparsely, only when they had to record a song/tune with that singer later on or that singer was with the boys after a gig..... Mind you Hank didn't mention Cliff's name at all during this anecdote....
Cheers Rob
