Hi Barry,
I would agree, and we all have influences along the way that shapes the way we think, but some players have not been active as players for many years and have more recently started playing again.
I think anything that helps to make up for the lost time is useful to those players.
Regards,
Charlie

Hi Barry,
My deletion above due to missing part of my reply.
I never tried EMG's but a friend of mine had some, from that and what I have found from elsewhere, is that while they have a very HiFi and maybe a compressed type sound, they do not have much vintage character.
My favourite pickups for the moment, and still obtainable, are Fender Custom Shop Fat 50's, but would say that they are more suitable on a Strat that has a lively acoustic sound, probably this requirement is more likely to come from well matching neck and body resonances, and nitro finish rather than poly. I say this with caution because I recommended them to someone and it turned out that he didn't like them.
I also have Fender Custom Shop 54's on another Strat with poly finish but find they sound a little thin and the B string response is weak compared with the Fat 50's even though the poles are similar heights on both sets. Many players do like the 54's though.
I haven't tried swapping these pickups from guitar to guitar. My feeling is that the Fat 50's will not sound as good on the poly guitar as they do on the nitro one.
Regards,
Charlie

Hi Barry,
Poly=polyester, nitro=nitro cellulose.
If polyester is applied too thickly it can seriously affect the potential sound of an instrument. This is the case with my other Strat.
The only advice I can offer to gain experience in telling the effects of a particular finish is to try to compare different examples of both acoustically, even more so than through an amp. Seriously, if you hear a good one acoustically, you should recognise it straight away.
Regards,
Charlie
