Hi Tony,
I am using U19 Magic Stomp and Bridge Pick-up for "Bilitis." The one thing I am trying to find, is a backing track.

U19 on the Magicstomp is equivalent to b6 on the G2 (Complex). It probably is one of the better ones to use, if not the best.
I think I have Bilitis on cassette but hard to get to at the moment. I cannot remember how the tune goes. Which album is it from? I might have it on vynil as well.
Regards,
Charlie

Hi Tony,
Thanks for the backing track. If you ever come across one for "One Day I'll Fly Away" I would be grateful. The tune is on "Themes and Dreams."

Hi Tony,
Thanks for the link. I suggest the same echo as used for Argentina and The Deerhunter. However, there is also added reverb on the record. So the Complex program might sound better although it is slower and longer, and I think it should fit the tempo fairly well.

Charlie

Hi Tony,
It was our second day in the studio. We had an 8 hour day booked. Yesterday we were there for 11 hours. My band is recording 15 new songs for a CD that we will market ourselves. We now have the basic tracks laid down with bass and drums and guitar but most tracks need a second guitar part, and all of them need the vocals done.
I have been getting wonderful guitar tones in the studio with an existing model of hand built amp that I am helping to improve the design of. I have mentioned this amp in another thread and have made major modifications to it. It is 20 watts output with a Weber 15" speaker that is based on the older JBL models but has a neo magnet instead of alnico, so the amp is much lighter weight to carry. It has performed flawlessly and I was not expecting it to be so versatile but I got every sound I wanted from all my guitars. I don't mean the sound I was expecting the amp to cope with, it went further than that, I was able to imagine a classic guitar sound for a particular piece and got exactly what I wanted for every track so far. It really brings out the natural tone of each one and then can be tuned to the sound you want from there. It seems bizzare, but the amp's controls do not really do that much but they do the right things. Even my other Strat sounded good (the one that is not my favourite! My favourite Strat needs a new switch, a new volume pot, and a refret). The better sound I got even made the Strat seem easier to play, although it is quite a nice guitar to play anyway. My other favourite amp is a Bassman 59 reissue but I like this one better.
Other guitars that I took with me were my Gretsch 6120 that looks like Eddie Cochran's, complete with p-90 neck pickup. I had to replace the DeArmond bridge pickup with another about 18 months ago as it had failed. I fitted an original 60's DeArmond in place of it. The replacement is much hotter sounding than the original.
I also took my Gretsch 6122-1959 that is an almost exact replica of the one Chet Atkins played until he went with Gibson. I used this for the finger picking of a rockabilly tune. My latest addition to my collection is a 1966 Gibson L5-CES. It is a great guitar and used it on a number of tracks. The rhythm sound I got from the neck pickup for one tune reminded me of the rhythm sound in Creedence Clearwater Revival.
The studio owner and engineer is very good and doesn't make me feel like I need to tell him what I want him to do. He also plays guitar and liked the sound of the amp. He also said that it sounded equivalent in loudness to a 40 watt amp. This will be mainly due to the efficiency of the speaker. Put it another way, our bass player was complaining about how loud I was playing, and he was wearing closed headphones!
I briefly tried my piezo equipped Yamaha J200 style acoustic guitar through the amp and got a fabulous smooth and clear sound (a bit like Chet Atkins' live acoustic sound which he used later in his career), although it will not be used this way for recording the acoustic parts.
I have to go back one evening this week to see if I can finish all the additional guitar parts. Then we have to do all the lead and backing harmony vocals on Sunday.
Then we have to to book another day (at least one day) for the mixdowns.
We can also purchase special DVD's (a specific type that I cannot remember) that will have all the data for the multitrack recordings. From this data, wav files can be taken of all the multitrack parts and copied to further DVD's so that if we ever want to do further mixing we can do it ourselves at home. We will probably pay the extra for this as we would then be in full control of the mixing in case there is anything we are not quite happy with after the mixing is done. I like this studio. It is called Orchard Cottage Studio and is in Willingham, near Cambridge. About 35 minutes drive from Ely, so it is convenient to reach for me.
Regards,
Charlie
