Here is a question:-
Which patch in the Hall & Collins S E is the best all round fit for all generic echo for a gigging band doing a whole range of tunes - vocal and instrumental ?
Cheers
Mick

Hi Mick, Try P15. That is the sound Hank used for live shows around 1961. For less echo, go down to P14, P13, P12, and for more echo go to P16. Or just alter the Echo Level control. Regards, Charlie

Hi Mick. I play Rythm guitar in a band playing 60’s and 70’s numbers and really like the P12 patch for an unobtrusive echo. Dave

Hello Charlie,
Thanks for relocating this thread for me and would you believe it I have actually already been using the suggested patches, so I’ve got something right. They work very well for many of the tunes I play.
Dave, great minds it seems.
I would mention that some time ago one of our members mentioned that patch 30 or 31 was his go to sound.
Cheers
Mick

Hi Mick, Patches 30 and 31 are Vox LongTom sounds. They can work very well for many lead guitar tunes. Regards, Charlie

When I listen to live recordings of 60-61-62...Hank doesn't touch his echo box... Everything at the same echo-setting indeed, and it works! All the hits incl. Apache and the tunes with Cliff on the WL sound...like Charlie advised.

Hi Rob, The different sounds Hank used for the different tunes were not always from the same echo unit. The live shows in that time period were almost always done with the Echomatic 2, which really only had one sound. There wasn't much need or point in altering it! The live Apache sound of Kingston was the Echomatic 2. Although nothing like the original echo sound, Hank made it work for him. Regards, Charlie

Yes Charlie indeed all and the same setting during the show. Although I've seen pic's with two Meazzi's like a stack...presumably one is a spare....because the echo units were so flimsy at times. Think magnetic tape and oil on the drums and a prayer they keep working. That's why they are now buried beneath a garage for 55 years!!!
Cheers Rob

When I saw the Shadows at the Paris Olympia in 1961, I remember that Hank never touched his echo box and amp for the whole concert, he used only one setting for all tunes.

Didier,
I wish I had witnessed that,I've heard a 'bootleg cd' of a 62 Olympia concert and although the numbers played where almost identical as the one I listen of 61 Scandinavia (Stockholm?) ...Licorice with stranger on the shore was announced... All tunes they played with the same echo-pattern... Just worked for Hank and the show! I reckon you've heard these bootlegs too Didier...
Cheers,
Rob

hi shadfans,i dont own an handc echo, butfor many years ive thought whatever your playing thro,if you can find the nearest echo to the one hank used on kontiki you can do an ok version of most instrumentals, specially the ones from the glory days.

KonTiki uses patch 15 on the H & C, exactly what was suggested as being a good general echo. Regards, Charlie

Hi, I use P30 or P31 to basically all songs and it works great for me. The fact that I use these can of course be due to the fact that I have prevviously used a Vox Long Tom Echo. All the best, Ove

Hi Charlie, with a Yamaha magic stomp patch 12 which is the Kontiki patch, is it a general sound for most things or is it patch 8 on the YMS. Regards, Garry.

Hi Garry, I think patch 10 on the Magicstomp would be better for a general echo similar to what is being discussed. Patch 8 is the same except there is less echo. Regards, Charlie

Hi everyone, Whilst I agree with everyone, re general echo patch15. For live shows I select the relevent patch for the tune played with great results and feedback from the audience on te sound. My argument is, why bother going to the expense of purchasing a wonderful piece of kit like the H&C then only end up using 1 patch when it matters. Just my opinion😁 Pete
