Has anyone seen the Bohemian Rhapsody Queen movie? I saw it and thought it was great š it centres around Freddie Mercury mainly amazing recreation of the Live Aid concert. I was paying attention to the guitars, it showed Brian using a Les Paul a few times not sure if he actually did or not? I also saw a Burns Marvin in a couple of studio scenes Matthew

Hi Matthew - I saw it yesterday - superb film I can highly recommend. Loved Brian's bank of 12 VOX AC 30's. I Thought it was very accurately portrayed and the music was just superb ! some of the friends I went with were on their 3rd time of seeing it !
Cheers Phil

Brian May built his red special because he couldnāt afford one, Iāve wondered how he could afford an AC 30 they wouldnāt have been cheap either? Matthew

As a long time Queen fan, I thoroughly enjoyed the film, although it is only fair to point out that a great deal of artistic license has been taken with the story - don't think of it as a documentary, you will be wildly misled!
The cast were excellent, but special mention has to be made of Rami Malek's portrayal of Mercury himself. Even with prosthetic teeth, his physical resemblance is limited - but the accuracy of his performance is such that you soon forget that. For me he "became" Freddie to the extent that on leaving the theatre, climbing into the car and cranking up my Queen collection on Google Play Music, I found myself visualising not Mercury but Malek-as-Mercury singing the songs!

I was in a band back in the 60s and I started out by borrowing a friend's amp to play gigs until I could afford my own. I'm sure someone with Brian's talents could easily afford an AC30 in short order. Back then they were a lot of venues for rock music and if you popular you were well paid.

Yeah, I'm not sure what AC30s cost in England back in the day, they cost around 5 thousand dollars in Australia, only since theyve been made in China they cost between 1 and 2 thousand Matthew

I seem to remember an AC30 costing around 130 guineas in or around 1961. A guinea was one pound and one shilling, or in decimal currency Ā£1.05. Guineas were very commonly used back in the UK then to make prices seem cheaper than they really were. Regards, Charlie

hi shadfans, vox ac30 cost 100 guineas in 1962 according to a printout from the vox showroom site and the chrome stand would set you back a whole 9 guineas !as i remember it, that would have been more than 5 weeks wages for a tradesman then.

I saw this movie here in Japan about ten days ago. It was the first visit to a cinema in thirty years! I thought it was an excellent film, but as mentioned else-where - by no means a documentary! However it did give some insights into the real Freddie Mercury - and - yes, so much was left out! I thought Rami Malek was excellent as Freddie. For me he became Freddie. Dave
