Hi All Watching the Cliff and The Shads video ( I think) I noticed they were using JMI amps. Are the JMI amps better than Vox or are they the same?

Hi Alan JMI = "Vox". Or was. Lol. Jennings Musical Industries created the "Vox" brand name. JMI, as such, went bust in 1968 although JEI (Jennings Elctronic Industries) still made amps. The "JMI" trademark was bought in 1997 by HiWatt who wanted to make reproductions of the Jennings/Dick Denney designs but couldn't call them "Vox" as Korg owns that name and puts out amps with that brand name on. Simples?;-)

Hi Ian Thanks for the reply. So are Vox and JMI Amps the same?
If JMI can't call them Vox because Korg owns the name is the amp different inside?

I think it all depends on what you mean by 'the same'. AFAIK - JMI made repro's of the 1960’s Denney designed Vox amps using the original circuitry and they look the same. Couldnt call them 'VOX' as Korg owned the name but the internal gubbins was old 'VOX' as I think you mean. Korg put out 'Vox' branded amps (cos they own the rights to use the name) but the internals AFAIK are anything but original circuitry. However, I have a Korg 'Vox' and I think it's pretty good unless you are a stickler for total tonal accuracy, and have the bank account to match.

Thanks Ian I have a Vox AC30 Hand wired and the sound is very good. It was purely a question because I saw the Shads using the JMI on the DVD and I wondered why not the Vox.

Alan; I believe JMI made clones of early handwired voxes and had to call them JMI as mentioned above they made a Shadows one seen here with top boost controls on the back youtu.be/l63SMMQyPyMMatthew

The only differences with the The Shadows Model was the plaque in the back that said so. JMI doesn't exist any-more, the website is belly up, and amp owners are into the dark regarding service and warranty.... All those years(9)ago it was Charlie who saved the shads with those JMI's amps....the speakers where wired wrong... The folks behind JMI and more are not the most trustful people you can meet.
Cheers Rob
