i’m Afraid he won’t get what he deserves, not in UK, were trapped in a legal system. As I understand it from a friend who was there, the guy gave him a good beating. Looks a rough place to play. Peter

You are right Phil, it never would have happened back in the 60s, and the original Cavern was demolished years ago.

And they apparently built a car park over it, it should have been listed! I played there in July 1966 and I remember it well Phil

Is the new Cavern in the same spot, or just a replica tourist attraction elsewhere? Matthew

They said...they have used 60 to 70 % of the original bricks. But the cellar is not on the same spot and much bigger and re-created on a deeper level below ground.
Cheers Rob

Hi Matthew,
The original Cavern club was on the opposite side of Mathew Street and nearer to the Stanley Street end.
Regards,
Maurice.

According to their website the Cavern Club has been relocated back to the original site of 10 Mathew Street, the links below provide an interesting history and the current FAQs page: www.cavernclub.org/history/www.cavernclub.org/venue/faq/In April 1984 they say it was an authentic reconstruction below ground level and that 15,000 bricks from the Cavern site were used, apparently 5,000 were signed by artists of the day and sold off for the Strawberry Field Children's Home. I guess you will have to start saving to satisfy your curiosity Mathew! LOL Regards, Gary

Perhaps my memory is not what it used to be but when I walked past the Cavern a few weeks ago it was still in the same place it was relocated to in the 70s. I remember walking from the Stanley street end of Mathew Street and the original Cavern was on the left had side but the relocated one is further up and on the right hand side. Maybe (Philc) Phil can remember as he also played there.

I haven't been there for a while now, but I do remember that in the 1990s the Cavern was still where Maurice describes. There is even some confusion in the links Gary provided, where one part of it states that the original site had been declared architectually unsound. I'll get one of my grandkids to take some pictures next time they're in town.

Hi Gary,
When I was last in Liverpool I seem to recall that the Cilla Black statue was outside the new Cavern. I will be in Liverpool in the next few weeks so I will make a point of looking where the statue is.
Best regards,
Maurice.

You can 'walk' up Mathew Street using Google Earth (Street View). The image is dated 06/2014. The doorway to the old Cavern is still marked and the new one is further up on the opposite side. Weirdly, the older statue outside (not Cilla) has had its face pixelated to protect its identity -- so I won't compromise it . DaveC.
