Hi ... I have had an American Professional Strat for a number of months now, and just love playing it, it is fitted with the Tim Shaw V-Mod pickups which have a very bright tone, but I am struggling to find any info as to how to set the pickup height , they are set very low at present(that's how it came) and I know every one has there own settings on guitars for getting there own balance and tone, Fender have there recommended heights for various sets of pickups and are a guide for most guitars... So, does anyone else have the same guitar and have any advice for adjustments ? I have tried moving them up slightly to try and get a warmer tone, but then as you can imagine it starts to get loud and brash

Hi Colin, They will probably come under the Vintage settings as they describe them as being"Vintage-informed tone", but why not check with your dealer or Fender support to confirm it? shop.fender.com/en-GB/contact-us?rl=en_USRegards Gary

I have set up my own American Pro Strat with Vmod pickups and also a friends. I believe the bass side is about 8/64s and around 6/ 64s middle and neck and 4/ 64s on bridge treble side.
These pus are actually wound more along the lines of Texas specials as far as resistance goes and intended to sound like fat 50s ? I wish Fender had modded the pole heights to match the fingerboard profile though. They use 3 different types of alnico too.
However I got a great shads sound from them after set up and listening as I adjusted.
I would adjust bridge pu for best output first initially setting heights I gave above. Try a few tunes that require the bridge and try to find where it sounds right. After that set middle and neck as stated above and then test for matching volumes to the bridge fir balanced sound. Try playing the treble strings on bridge and switching between neck and middle to match for similar volume and then bass string responses against bridge output.
This should get you in a good position and you may feel slight changes were needed but only turn screws slightly .
I have put a 12 on the top e as it was a bit thin as it always is with vintage type pus. They were made for heavy strings really especially for instro type playing.
Additionally I like to use the tone controls to roll off the highs.

I don't think it's to sound more technical, it's probably intended to convey the expected tolerance accuracy in a user friendly manner.

I have worked in engineering all my life, and when doing smaller measurements, with my ageing eyesite, millimeters are a god sent, and when measuring small gaps like string heights, for me its far easier, americans still use imperial in all measurements, and fender continue to do so,but its all down to taste, there's no right or wrong

Personally I Just set it where it sounds right and play. I've spent many (wasted to a point) years looking at everything under the microscope and over analysing. I could of been playing instead :-)

Many thanks to you all, and Roger, I have adjusted my pickups to the Fender texas settings, which are not a million miles from your recommendation, and I have got to say they sound more rounded and full, my original height was much lower approx. 1mm on all 3 p/ups,had to knock my amp settings down a bit, and yes I can just roll the tone to suit, at the end of the day its all about having the confidence to start adjusting, in the hope that it improves your needs, guitar pickups are the most essential part of your sound ... Regards Colin
