Hi All,
I'm toying with the idea of a self build strat, well, more of a flat pack arrangement, just screw it together ikea style really.
I've seen a body I like the look of (strat you understand) with a three bolt pre-drilled neck fit with micro tilt adjust, is it possible to put on a four bolt neck either with or without the micro adjust.
Any info or experiences would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim.

Hi Tim,
It is probably possible but would mean having to drill two more holes in the body.
I have a Warmoth neck on a Fender Custom Shop Strat body, which originally had a similar micro tilt adjuster fitted. I just removed it and had the neck drilled to take to 4 bolts. It all depends on the accuracy and level of the neck pocket, if it is not precisely shaped, the neck could end up at a bad angle without the micro tilt.
If you are thinking of obtaining a different neck, I would first do some careful measuring to make sure it will fit properly. I don't know if it is possible to drill new holes in a 3 bolt neck as I can't remember all the spacings and details but if it is possible it could save having to find a different neck.
I suppose experience in these things is everything if mistakes are to be avoided. Put it this way, I wouldn't do it myself, I'd get someone else to do the work.
Regards,
Charlie

Hi Tim,
Having gone the other way and fitted a three bolt neck on a
four bolt body with 3 bolts I found that reverting back to a four bolt
fixing meant the lower hole showing below the neck plate, so you would need
to do some filling in.
My 3 bolt '77 neck is now fitted to a 2006 American 70's re-issue black
strat body and it fits like a glove, apparently the problems with the 3 bolt
fixing in the 70's were due to poor manufacturing tolerances.

Hi Folks,
thanks for the replies to this thread however it's no longer an issue as the body I saw has now found a new home, it was an amazing two piece ash with the join exactly in the middle of the body with a clear finish, looked absolutely stunning to me, like a mirror effect but as I said pre drilled. Anyhow it's gone, maybe another will come along undrilled, I did like the natural look of it.
Actually the more I think about it, is that the best place for a join bearing in mind the neck pocket and body routing would probably cause a weakness, maybe a one piece would be best!
Thanks for the input,
Tim.

Hi Tim,
One piece would be nice but I think most production Strats were at least 2 pieces, and probably with the join not usually down the centre line. I had a 70's Strat body that had been finished in natural colour and it had 5 pieces.

Charlie

Hi Charlie,
must stop meeting like this, I've seen a few bodies in a clear finish but none I really liked the look of but I realise that's just me being picky however this one was to me exceptionally beautiful with a join line running directly through the middle of the neck pocket, above and below that line was a mirror image so I'm guessing a solid piece cut in two and then formed into a body, absolutely stunning. Don't know about the structural integrity of something like that so any views would be appreciated. I would have thought one piece would have the neck pocket and routing for maximum strength with other pieces added to form the shape as required, rather as you said with one of your guitars.
Regards,
Tim.
