Hi all, new to this forum and have been interested in The Shadows and Hank Marvins playing. i am considering of buying a stratocaster but was wondering what would be idea for me to play like the person above? At the moment I am using a Cruiser by Crafter strat style electric guitar (a gift from wife) and have been playing for 2 months daily now (had the guitar for 3 years!!) I use at the moment the above guitar with a Park by Marshall amp and have been 'playing' lead guiter tabs with backup cds. Would like to know if it s wise to purchase a strat or maybe give my present guitar a 'MOT'? What other equipment would help me in the long term?? Do I need an echo relay unit like the zoom 508 or is there a newer version / replacement??? I have been thinking about the Squire but was wondering if I am better off paying that bit more for a 'better' Fender? I know I should try the guitar at the store but my playing ablities are not that great at the moment.....(may never get any better ) so trying at the store will not really help me. Also is my amp ok for the time being as I have been looking at the AC30 but seen the prices on the well known auction site!!!! wondered if there is a budget amp which will help me to get the Hank Marvin sounds? Sorry if I am repeating questions that have been asked before but do not really want to get conned at the store. Regards Karlo

Hi Karlo, welcome to the site. To give some answers to your questions: Would like to know if it s wise to purchase a strat or maybe give my present guitar a 'MOT'? Probably not purchase a Strat yet, but consider putting some Strat Pickups on your Strat style guitar. What other equipment would help me in the long term?? Do I need an echo relay unit like the zoom 508 or is there a newer version / replacement??? Yes there is a newer version, there are a few zoom devices that can be programmed with Charlies EFTP they are detailed in this thread: charliehall.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1110 You need to buy the device and Charlie will sell you the program (prices are indicated in that thread) for EFTP. Everything on the list with the exception of Zoom models are out of production and the only way to get hold of them is to buy a used one with the usual risks of used equipment. I have been thinking about the Squire but was wondering if I am better off paying that bit more for a 'better' Fender? Its always nice to have a good guitar, but it would be better to get to a reasonable playing standard before spending a lot of money , you can still get a very good sound from a budget guitar with a few modifications. Also is my amp ok for the time being as I have been looking at the AC30 but seen the prices on the well known auction site!!!! wondered if there is a budget amp which will help me to get the Hank Marvin sounds? Again, you don't need to get anything special for an amp at this stage, if you intend to record to your computer, you don't even need an amp with the Zoom units, they include amp modelling, all you would need is a decent audio interface to your computer and use the free Audacity recording software. I hope this gives you some help. Kind regards, Chris

Thanks for that Chris, will give me time to save up and practise. At the moment I am learning Apache and Phantom of the Opera!! Will any strat pickup do or are the particular ones to get? (will need to see if they will fit my guitar of course!) Also wondering what unit will be the best one to get via your experience?
Regards
Karlo

Hi Karlo, Welcome to the site. A suitable echo unit would transform the sound more than anything else in your case. You might consider the Zoom G2 or G2.1u (same as the G2 but with an expression pedal (set for volume) and a USB recording output). The programs I sell for either cost £15 and have to be input manually which should take an hour or two. The Zoom 508 is not as good as the above units, has been discontinued for along time, and they tend to be expensive for what they are. If you already have one I have free programs for it, that should tell you how much I value the 508. Unless you know much about guitars it would be worth having someone you trust to check that yours is as well set up as possible, especially the tremolo. Regards, Charlie

thanks you very much Charlie, I am looking at getting the zoom g2 or g2.1u and was wondering how I get the patches onto them? I would safely assume that it would be easlier for the gu2.1u (usb) but I do have the midi leads that goes into a usb end maybe able to use for transfering patches to the normal g2? so the only difference between the g2 and the g2u1 is the connection and the pedal? Regards Karlo

Hi Karlo, The USB on the G2.1u cannot be used to transfer the programs from a computer. It is only for outputting sound from the pedal directly to a computer for recording. When I supply the program files there is a list of the parameters for each program. Once the first program is written manually into the unit, it can be copied to the next patch to save having to input all of the parameters again, and so on. Regards, Charlie

Hello Karlo, welcome to the site!! The difference between the two Zoom units is indeed the USB connection and the pedal. If you are just starting out you probably won't use the pedal. I play only at home and I never use mine. Also, you probably won't be recording, so the USB won't be used either. That narrows it down to the Zoom G2. (You have saved some money already ;D). I don't know where you are located but why not try and pick up a good used unit on the well known auction site? After that you can contact Charlie and for 15 pounds he will email you the patches. They are installed by pressing buttons and turning knobs as per Charlie's instructions. Once you have entered 2 or 3 it becomes easy ( ;D ;D ) If you have problems, just ask on the site and I'm sure someone will be glad to help..............we've all been in that position!! If you don't want to make too much noise or prefer to practice in private, you can plug a pair of Headphones into the unit and only you will be able to "appreciate" your "skills". Believe me it sounds great through Headphones and you can adjust the sound as you are playing without losing the original patch......unless you wan't to change it of course. (please forgive me for that remark Charlie ) Zoom has come out with units to replace the G2 and G2.1u so if you can wait, I wouldn't mind betting that in the near future you will start to see G2's and G2.1's for sale with the patches already installed. That is of course when Charlie gets a hold of one of the new ones and works his "magic" on it. Either way you can't go wrong with the G2 and I'm sure it will give you hours of fun. Regards, Ray.

Hi Karlo, If the seller confirms that it has my programs, let me know the serial number so I can check it is genuine. Otherwise you could pay extra for nothing. There are no updates for my G2 or G2.1u programs, except for a free Duane Eddy patch that I gave details for on this site a few days ago. Regards, Charlie

Hi Karlo, The unit can be reset back to the settings it had when it left the factory. This won't really matter for the programs that will be overwritten by mine as they will be changed anyway. But it is a good idea to reset a secondhand unit in case there are changed global settings. Regards, Charlie

Hi Barry, thanks for the kind remarks. I cannot wait for this but wondering if I am running before I can walk.
Still cannot play a full song if Shadows and trying to get all the equipment.
At the moment researching on whether to change pickups on my strat copy or actual buy a strat. Seeing what is better in the long run.
Regards Karlo

Hi DC, Now you mention it I'm not sure. It is always a good idea to reset a second hand unit anyway, as long as any changed programs are not required. Regards, Charlie

HI KARLO ,,, don't worry about not being able to complete tunes without mistakes ,,asI have been at it for 4 years now gathering gear etc etc & still cannot compete tunes 100% !! I do not worry too much as I enjoy my tinkering with the sound's as much as playing.. On the guitar I have a US strat[many $$$$] ,but my better guitar is a squier that I fitted a set of ''fat-fifties'' pick-up's & a 10ozs trem-block & it has a much better sound that the US strat !!!!! to save some money look in our for-sale-section for ''JC-VINTAGE'' pickup set & as I also have a set of these I can tell you they are very very close to the fat-fities in sound & are very well made to original fender practice [check-put-his web-site].. SO IF your present guitar play's well & you like it do some modification's to it & save some money!!!!
CHEERS ...........barry..

I have a Zoom G2.1U pedal and after reading the above entry i would like to purchase your patch program to improve my shads sound. How do i go about it please. Countrylad

hi all, just an update. I will be picking up my guitar tomorrow from a set-up and will connect all up ready for playing I have been told that the guitar is in very good condition after 3 years + and only thing wrong is one of the tone knobs, crackles when turning. Wondered if this is a major job?? I was asked why the plastic cover were still on the scatchplate... lol, did not know it had to be taken off.. Cannot wait now to get back into playing. Regards Karlo

Hi Karlo, I think I already answered your question in a different thread. Try rotating the tone pot full left and right several times, it might help to clear any oxidisation or dust from the pot track surface. Regards, Charlie

Charlie, Would you pick the Zoom G2 or G2.1u over the Yamha Magicstomp?

Hi gc24, No, I would prefer the Magicstomp for echo sounds. I do like the G2 etc. ability to do several things at once though. Regards, Charlie

Hi Richie, As I am currently going through the sound files in an effort to catch up, I found this one of FBI: charliehall.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=music&thread=4549&page=1There will be many others but not all players tell us what gear they used unless asked. Chris (grip) has posted many files using a G2 but recently changed to using a Quadraverb. Tony (Caddyshack) uses one too but also uses a Magicstomp so it is a bit difficult to know which he used for each tune. Regards, Charlie
