I was watching that Crackerjack Video yesterday and I always thought Hank played FBI on the bridge PU but clearly he switches. Its not easy to see but I think he starts out on the neck then goes to bridge on the lower end verse and the solo then back to neck after solo then back to bridge on lower end to finish. What do you think / know about the PU selection on FBI ? Roger

On one of the early The Cliff Richard Shows where The Shads get their only solo spot, they play FBI and Hank does the same, he changes to the bridge p/u in the middle eight, but I can't remember if he comes from the middle or neck p/u.

Thanks for quick response Alan.. Its difficult to see for sure if its the neck or middle as the video quality is poor but I managed to get a still view and from what I could make out it looks like neck but can't be sure. I noticed the Frightened City Crackerjack he also changes PU selection as well ... well I feel like a real anorak now !! anybody else ?
Actually thinking about it HBM does seem to take care with the selection so I think more likely the middle PU otherwise he'd just throw the PU switch very quickly ... maybe

Hi,
Don't forget that the stratocaster he was using then was probably a 3 position selector switch, unless he had it fitted with a 5.

Hi Guys
Ever since I saw the video a few years ago I started to play FBI the same way. Makes hell of a difference I think.

Interesting that Hank changed pickups through the tune. There were no 5 way switches until around the 70's. I don't think Fender were the first to think of it, may have been Ernie Ball or another aftermarket company that produced them. Probably made by CRL anyway. Regards, Charlie

Hi, According to various books it was 1977 when the switch was changed to the 5 position, although as Charlie said they were available from third party vendors. Also around that time the Shads guitars were still provided for them I think so they would most likely be "bog standard" guitars. Roger, it does look like the middle position in that still. Amanda P.S. Roger I Like your pussy cat cat PPS. Rotten software - it keeps adding cat after "pussy cat"

Hi all,
I am quite sure that Hank is using the middle pickup and only switches to bridge pickup on the low parts. If you listen to many of the old hits he quite often uses the middle pick up on parts of the melody, for example Kon-Tiki where he plays the verses on bridge pu and switches to middle pu for the chord brakes. That is also the case with The Stranger, where he goes from bridge to middle pu on the middle eight. The Boys is another example of switching. There are probably more...

I think HBM changes pickups in certain tunes as well so it might be good to find out more about all of this from other members in a seperate thread maybe ? RB

The censor is built in, and customisable. I changed pussy cat to read pussycat. The first correction I had to make was when Roger Allcock's name came out as Roger Allthingy! Regards, Charlie
