Hi LO, I have seen Colin using various different equipment and he always seems to sound the same. As far as I know, he uses an early Squier Strat or an early US vintage reissue Strat. I believe both of these are fitted with the original pickups and they may be the same kind of pickups because the early Squier Strats had US pickups. He was using a Binson Echorec II, probably set to position 7 for the 3rd and 4th heads, when I first saw him play. Since then he has used a Vox Long Tom, and since I last saw him play, a Meazzi, and an Atlantis echo, I don't know if he has used others. He often used a Fender Twin, but also uses Vox AC30 amps. Regards, Charlie

Thanks Charlie.
This is nearly the same linup I'm using. I feels that my sound i to sharp (thin). What effect will PU height have om the sound (treble)? I'm using CS54 PU's. Can it be that my PU's are to close to the strins.?

Hi Leif, It could be that the pickups are too close to the strings. If you use a chromatic tuner and check the high notes on all strings, you might find some where the tuner does not hold steady. Try lowering the pickups in a balanced way until the notes are more steady. The sound should be less sharp and sweeter but there will also be some volume loss. The pickups in the early reissues are very different to Custom Shop 54's. I found CS 54's to be too bright for my Strat. They would probably better suit a warmer sounding guitar, acoustically, maybe with a rosewood neck and alder body. Regards, Charlie

I first saw The Rapiers three years ago when they appeared with The Searchers in Taunton. I am fairly sure Colin played a 62 reissue Strat. What was interesting about that evening was, at the end of their set, Colin thanked The Searchers for the use of their amps (Fender) - The Rapiers had to hurry back home as they were playing the following day at the concert in memory of Wayne Nicholls. I thought Colin had a terrific sound through the Fender Twin amp. Paul
