It's a shame Bernard, the info was up for everyone to see, this is what Paul wanted, I can't even imagine how many years it took him to put together....now it's in the bin as if it hadn't existed....what a waste!

I think Spike was more or less in control of the web page, it's a shame that it no longer exists as it was a great reference regarding the Shadows gear etc, maybe he couldn't be bothered any more.....and all that time and effort Paul took accumulating all of this is just thrown out of the window?

Just my two pence worth, pedals like the Keeley Compressor/Plus compressor are not the same as the compressors used at Abbey Road, ie the Altecs and Fairchilds, these are different beasts and don't work in the same way.

My son has an old JBL GO which he played to me before he bought my FLIP 6 and they sounded great but these with a speaker each end is on the money, and that bass sound from such small speakers is incredible! Phil

For those interested, I've just had in my stocking JBL FLIP6 Speakers, not much bigger than a can of Coke, I can't emphasise how good they are, excellent bass to high frequencies, really really excellent!

He created and re-created his style, there was no-one to equal him, R.I.P Jeff, my alltime number 1 guitarist!

Many thanks to Patrice, Bernard and Paul for their expertise and time regarding the Meazzi echo's, which are a big part of that sound, of course we all know that there is a lot more involved Merry Christmas all. Phil

Some tuners have an option to change the tuning by various degrees, have you checked that yours is not set that way by mistake, I remember doing that many years ago!

I have an original April 62, which I think would be no different to a 61, if you want to compare the sound, quite a lot of my posts are with this guitar.

Probably a true story, but there are so many things that are actually made up, for example, the clicking in time on the Beatles Blackbird, I think it was Geoff Emerick who said that it was Paul tapping his foot on the floor whilst recording which is nonsense, it’s definitely some kind of click track.
Jeff Beck said about the “reverse” guitar at the end of Beck’s Bolero, Micky Most told him to play random notes with which he reversed to create the effect, rubbish, it’s a simple delay on a riff JB plays.

Glad to see your back Mike, my wife caught it probably on the plane coming back from Tenerife in April, I didn't? Then I caught it again I think on a plane coming back from Italy in June, I had it bad for three weeks and had the swallowing broken glass syndrome, just come back again from Italy yesterday, fingers crossed we don’t get it again! So, time for you to get that sound file sorted Phil

Thanks Phil. I can get the sounds but somehow feel the 3rd string feels dull Ronnie Check that the wound third is resting properly on the zero fret and bridge, ( I doubt it's a nut or zero fret problem as this would only relate to an open string being plucked) I’m not sure which Marvin you have, ie. A vintage or modern, sometimes with pickups, a magnet can be too low, if this is the problem, miniature magnets of the required diameter can be bought on the net and of various thicknesses to build up the original low one. You can also cut a disk from nail of the right thickness just to try. Can you post a sound file? Phil

If you’re after that mid 60’s sound Ronnie, it’s all down to the right pickup, amp setting and echo patch and volume, that is if there is echo on the original track your after.

I have used different makes on my 1964 Marvin, usually 12’s and of course a wound 3rd for the mid 60’s sound. I have no preference, just check out my Burns sound files, there is no magic make for that tone. Phil

The bass player is naturally right handed and says that he had to learn how to play the guitar and bass left handed so I think that is pretty impressive. Yes impressive, also the fact that they use the same guitars as the records, the Bootleg Beatles are good but they sometimes use the same guitars for each number! Phil

That's an excellent summery of how it should be Paul, but alas, as you say, a pipe dream, …..if only….it would probably be the best concert the Shadows had ever done and would bring smiles to a lot of dedicated fans, but…too much gear and too many variations, but not impossible, the weakest link in the chain however would be the guy on the desk that has to sort it all, no matter how good he is, he would need to know and understand all the variables with Hank’s sound, not forgetting the rest of the band like Jet and Brian R’s magical wood like tones, on numbers like South of the border and Flingel Bunt, but again, they would need changing for Sleepwalk etc……we can only dream about a concert like this Phil

I'm now convinced that pedals and gadgets such as the Ariab and Gemini III are not essential to the sound if you have a good Vox core tone to begin with, though they do help if you struggle to set up an amp for yourself.😎

In the early 60’s That Sound did not exist, it was just four musicians plugging in, setting the amp controls to how they wanted them, in Hanks case, selecting a pleasing echo and tweaking the volume, delay etc, the sound, once recorded was worked on to get it better, so eq was added, sometimes reverb, someone might have said, stick Hank through a compressor for this one as it will give better attack to the notes and bring the echos out. Everything was at hand, but there was no “that sound” to copy….it was just there!
Re.creating a similar sound to Hanks is not rocket science but getting an exact studio sound can be a bit frustrating as it needs to be understood what’s going on, then working out how to get it.

There are so many modelling amps around today it’s mind boggling, I think, too many people looking at too many switches just get back to basics Phil
