hi to everyone hope you all had a merry christmas and a happy new year here is my question my friends son asked me if i could recommend a good practise amp that would sound ok for shadows music he has a squier strat and a zoom g2 he has a budget of about £80 and needs an amp {his frontman has just died} i suggested a vox pathfinder 15 or a vox vt 20 but they are a little above his budget i have a vox ac4tv which he loves but it is way above his budget i have looked at the roland cube and a bugera bc15 tube amp and a few others for him but i do not have any experience of these amps so can`t really recommend any of them do any of you guys have any suggestions he wants an amp that has that vox sound because he plays the g2 with the amp sims turned off thanks in advance tuftyrock

Wow. Difficult question. To get a good practice sound (Shads). First thing is to change out the pots and pickups on the Squier unless its a Classic Vibe. 250k pots, and a set of Ironstone Gold pickups. Total approx £40.
Then use another frontman or similar, turn the amp modeling on the G2 back on. Turn the treble and Bass on the amp down low, 1-2 mark, and the middle up to 8 or above.
That should do the trick. If he wants to turn off the amp modeling, you need a good Valve amp, or Vox VT modeling amp. Difficult on that budget.
Even then, I would still make the changes to the squier first.

The Pathifinder 15 is certainly the way to go. With some search and time, you should be able to find a second hand one within your budget limit. I bought one on the well known auction site for my son a few years ago.
You might also find a second hand Vox AD15VT or VT15.

I own both VOX PathFinder 15R and BOSS microCUBE and I think for domestic use they are suitable, but as somebody else already suggested, for Shadows sound it is important to cut both treble and bass and this can be accomplished in several ways. Anyway the simplest solution would be perhaps to switch on the ZOOM-G2 amp simulator and connect to an HiFi like amplifier. happy new year to everybody benitor

I have a Vox T-25 bass amp and I can recommend it warmly. It has a great sound, four tone knobs that can really nail the Shadows sound. Great practice amp both for bass, rhythm, or lead. Cabn also be used for small gigs. Very inexpensive but still has the Vox vibe. It is no longer in production, but occasionally appears on E-Bay.

hi dave .o thanks for you suggestion we have been looking at the mustang on the web seems to tick all the boxes but haven`t heard any sound files on clean settings and as usual most of the online reviews have been done by spotty youths with distortion at max will have to try find an example of clean tones on you tube regards tuftyrock

Hi Tuftyrock I will try to record a clean channel I created on the Mustang I. And also a 'Hank wannabe' echo on the same unit and post it. You will be able to judge a little bit of the quality. I will not retouch or equalize anything. Sheendigs

hi tuftyrock, coming in a bit late on this thread. ive not heard the mustang 1, but ive heard the pathfinder15 and its a good amp. if you can find a vox cambridge15 it would be a better choice for shadows music but they are hard to come by. sometimes they appear on the well known auction site. regards tony

Have you considered a roland cube street , it's small portable cheap , can run on battery power , it has a CD input , mic input , guitar input , built in effects , and has a nice clean sound , has good volume , there are a lot of clips on utube , here is an interesting one . regards murray . www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5o-Vc1ZzDo&feature=related

Hi tuftyrock I have a Roland MicroCube but this model doesn't have EQ settings. I often use it though as its batteries last so well and it's easy to pick up and move around the room. Interestingly I'd planned to upgrade and buy the next model up which had EQ and 4 speakers but ended up buying a much bigger Cube-40XL as it was cheaper than the MicroCube. Although both the Roland amps are excellent for my playing level, I wouldn't say they're perfect amps for Shads sounds but together with my Zoom Unit and Charlie's EFTP I'm very happy with them as amps. Best wishes Rosemary
