Hi I hope you are all well. Sorry I haven't posted on the forum for a while, I just lead a busy life. I have a few days off now and just bought a new baby. She's a Gibson Les Paul Studio in white with gold hardware and ebony fretboard, plays and sounds absolutely wonderful. I have decided to record a video playing Fleetwood Mac's Albatross. I hope you like it. Best Wishes Regards Steve B

Hi Bo, George, Val and Chris,
Thank you all for viewing my video of Albatross and for your kind comments.
I was having trouble bending the notes together in harmony and then I looked up an old Fleetwood Mac video on youtube and discovered there were 3 guitarists and in the harmony parts there were always 2 of them playing the lead, so I had to put some of the harmonies on the backing track first.
Best Wishes to you all Regards Steve B

Bravo! I can't get enough of the old Peter Green Fleetwood Mac. Just great stuff. This song sounds "proper" with the Lester.

Hi tremo, Thank you for taking the time to comment on my video of Albatross. I agree with you that the Les Paul has a good sound for it, however I'm sure Peter Green said that some parts were originally recorded with a strat. Best Wishes Regards Steve B

Greeny has gone on record as saying that a Strat was used on Albatross, but he can't remember which parts. As you rightly say, there are many harmony parts on that song and Greeny didn't actually play any of the lead stuff, just those harmony parts.
I was lucky enough to work with him just after he got back on the road in the 90's and I asked him about that recording in particular. So it's straight from the horses mouth as it were.
He also told me that the Les Paul he gave to Gary Moore (RIP) did not have any modifications when he owned it. Gary said that the pickups had been removed by Greeny and put back the wrong way, which gave it an 'out of phase' sound as he put it.
So make of that what you will, I guess the rock and roll lifestyle may have clouded memories from that era. I'm not sure that anyone would have remembered such detail anyway, even without those 'distractions'.
It's only us guitar anoraks that are really interested in these things...
Graham

Hi Graham, That must have been brilliant working with Greeny. In my younger days i did supports with some good groups in the 70's i.e. Matchbox, The jets etc but none quite as famous as Peter Green. I'm glad you can confirm that a strat was used in Albatross as I couldn't remember where I read it. Best Wishes Regards Steve B

Hi Steve, you've done a nice job with this one and very close to the original in sound and playing....I did miss some vibrato though on the note bend parts, which would have added to it It is said that Greeny had some work done on his LP and the magnets reversed by mistake, it is more likely that the wireing was reversed on one pickup which would make it out of phase. Some of the old recordings have that sound, I have done this with my LP and have got a sound not possible to get with the straight set-up. Phil

Hi Phil, Thanks very much for listening to Albatross and your kind words. I hear what you mean about the vibrato, and appreciate you pointing that out, you have a very good ear for these things. I think i have also relied on the trem on my strats to get vibrato especially playing shads stuff, so the Les Paul might help me develop my technique too. Best Wishes Regards Steve B

Hi Claude and Ian
Thank you both for watching my video and for your kind comments. The Les Paul Studio is much like any other apart from it doesn't have the binding around the body fretboard and in some cases headstock, but in white with gold hardware and ebony fretboard it looks great anyway.
Best Wishes Regards Steve B

Hi Rosemary, Thank you for your nice comments on Albatross, it's such a lovely tune isn't it. I'm really pleased you like it as I have just bought the Gibson Les Paul and I sometimes keep trying to grab the non existent tremolo arm. I Have to wiggle my fingers more for vibrato. Best Wishes Regards Steve B
