Hi, I read the very interesting research of echotapper. Naturally we cannot built that Studio 2 equipment, but some hints seems to be useful. How to get a little near to it. One thing is the bass-cut (or high-pass). I did not reach it with my 10-band EQ, but now I tried with my Roland-Guitar-Synthesizer (without MIDI) and the built in EQ goes down to -20dB and it gets better. I am thinking about to buy a Gemini III, but I am not really convinced by the demos yet.
Compressor: I tried the MRX emulation with my Line 6 POD X3 Live, its a nice sustain, but only 2 parameters. Now I checked the Roland's Compressor with much more parameters that allow to start the compression kick in later (Goran!).
Did anyone try that way?
Kind regards Pinot

Hi Pinot
This is the way i use my setup magicstomp electro harmonix black finger (valve compressor) cutting edge pedal into a vox ac15 heritage sounded brilliant and got real close to my ears to that sound .

Hi Gary Mac, magicstomp for the echo! black finger for compression! cutting edge pedal? which one do you use?
Do you think on something to get the Studio 2 Reverb Chamber effect and that short "slapstick echo" they produced with the 2nd Tape echo machine?

Hi all, thank you for all that informations. I decided to order the Gemini III and the Black Finger, in both cases is 30 days send back if I am not satisfied, but I am very optimistic after all I read here and elsewhere.
I am afraid of the day my Q+ will die and Charlies new unit is not available. The TVS should be a good unit, but too expensive for hobby use, sorry that Charlie don't consider the Eventide Eclipse. But I hope his unit will come soon and will not be too expensive.
Kind regards Pinot

Hi Gary Mac again,
is it really good to put the Black Finger compressor after the Magicstomp Echo?
Kind regards Pinot

In an effects chain, the compressor usually comes first in line. That then gives all the following effects a nice steady constant signal level.

Hi tremo, That is true, but you have to also consider how the older Shadows recordings were made. Hank played with the guitar to echo to amp, after which the miked sound was compressed at some point, whether alone, or at mixdown (if overdubs were done, for example), or at the cutting stage. Therefore, having the compressor after the echo will come closer to that older sound. It has the effect of making the echo seem louder with more regeneration than there really is. I found that Hank uses less feedback live than one would expect, so there is no reason to think that he would have set it much differently in the old days. The only thing that would make the echo seem as long as we think we are hearing it would be compression on the recording. Having the compression before the echo will of course smooth the whole guitar sound a lot, and would explain why Hank's later sound is quite different, since the echo is added later on the newer recordings. Regards, Charlie

Hi Pinot
Sorry for not replying earlier when i was going through the shadows tracks i noticed the amount of compression on some of the tracks but not all so i tried it that way and i found it worked for me and of course charlies echos are doing all the work .
The black finger just adds the finishing touch that would have probably happened in the studio ....
The only thing i can suggest is try it depends what amp you are running it into the vox ac 15 heritage was and still is the biz as i tried it in a few other amps and it did not sound the same but then i was running it through my ef86 channel sounds awsome lol
good luck Gary

Hi Gerd & co,
I would be interested to hear your opinions on the Black Finger Compressor, as I have just read some reviews on it and no one said anything good about it until I got to the 5th review.
Kind regards,
Chris

Hi all, my chain yesterday before reading Charlie: guitar - comp - Gemini - POD X3Live -FX loop to Q+ back -add. reverb(chamber Studio 2) and slapstick tape echo - amp my chain now: guitar - Gemini - Q+ - POD X3Live Comp+add. reverb(chamber Studio 2) - amp
Now I get I very expended echo, much better than before but a little too much. I cannot control it on that way, I think Q+ Input / Output regulates only volume.
Yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away :-)
Kind regards Pinot

Hi Chris and all,
I use the black finger for over two years, and yes , it`s a "misty" beast, bud a good sounding one! I`ve to change the tubes ( electro-harmonics) one time , bud on the other hand is a warmth, good sounding compressor! I also own a Boss CS-2, bud I`m only working with the black finger!
Especially the "lamp" setting and "sqlh" are delivering a good sounding result.
Cheers!
Gerd
