Curious as to the dates when Hank Marvin stopped using tape based echo units and went for digitals on stage.... and which digitals did he use?
I presume he used Alesis at some point, but was that the only one he ever used?

Charlie/All,
If my memory serves me correctly we took Hank's "new" Q20's to him when we were asked to attend Cliff's Millenium tour rehaearsal studio.
Hank was featured on that tour, upon delivery of the Q20's we got the Q2's in exchange with Hank's signature and personal message written on them.
Peter
Can't seem to upload the picture of theQ2's right now , so I attached a file , who knows if you will be able to open it ?

Hi Peter,
I think Hank had already got the Q20's in his rack by the time of the Millenium tour rehearsals. What we took that day was another boxed Q20, fully programmed and modified, that we gave to Hank to take back to Australia.
I seem to remember that the Q2/Q20 swap was done at Arbiter but I could be wrong. I remember him signing the Q2's well enough and we were both there, wherever it was.
The file you provided works for me.
Regards,
Charlie

Charlie,
It's strange that we have conflicting memories on this but hey it's not really that important at the end of the day.
We over the years were extremely privileged to meet Hank many, many times and be part of the show in our own small way, I do however remember the first time we did the "pre tour" visit to the studio and saying to you on the way home "did that really just happen? Golden years mate !!!

......... and can you really wonder why Hank and Bruce can't remember things that happened almost 50 years ago.
Hope you're keeping well Peter.

Alan,
Trust you are well...
The important part about all of this to us regarding our many memories is not really on which precise day the events happened however that does not help the likes of JohnM with his original question, still our estimates are not that far apart.
Cheers,
Peter

Much more info given here than the original question really deserved...but all extremely interesting nevertheless.
I never realised such a simple question would generate so much background material.
Thanks - John M.

Hi Peter,
I do remember Lionall telling me at the Millenium rehearsals that he thought there was a problem with the Q20's (something about the mains being live!) which resulted in me making a frantic call to Sound Technology for advice, only to find that the person who might have had an answer was not there that day. This makes me remember that it was the first time that Lionall had been involved with the use of the Q20's. In the end, there was no problem because he hadn't explained properly to me that the Q20's were powering up on their own, which is what they are supposed to do!
I definitely remember calling Hank prior to that day to offer the Q20 that we were giving him and he asked me if I was sure we could afford it, so I assured him that we could and that we wanted him to have one to take home with him. I would not have called Hank to offer him a Q20 if he had not already tried the Q20's, so my memory is that as soon as he tried them and liked them, they were immediately swapped there and then, before I phoned him about the additional Q20 and before the Millenium rehearsal. I also remember explaining to him that I had enhanced the Echomatic 1 echoes with a more random sounding pitch error and that I had added the extra head on Man Of Mystery, and asking him if he liked it better, to which he replied that he did.
I also remember something about the earth connection being disconnected from the amp cable while I was trying to figure out why there was a hum when the Q20's were installed and it was fixed by reconnecting the amp earth by using a different amp mains cable, and that was definitely at Arbiter. It might also have been the same day that Hank tried the Session amp that we took along, comparing it with his Matchless, and maybe he also tried the Digitech RP21D that day as well. I remember a lot happened one time we went there and I think it was the only time we were both there with him at Arbiter.
So I think in a way you are right about Hank using the Q20's at the Millenium rehearsal for the first time, only it was in public (as there were many people there), but not on a tour, and I think that I am right that he had tried them and approved them and were immediately installed in his rack prior to that.
I don't remember whether Hank had made 2 separate visits to the UK for all of this or not. If he made 2 separate visits then I cannot remember why the first visit was made, but it would definitely not have been just for the purpose of trying our offerings. Did he do a solo tour towards the end of 1999? I think his tours were usually about every 18 months or so, one early in 1997, one late in 1998, and then?
Now, if you can remember when we went to Arbiter with the Session amp and Digitech (and probably the Q20's), I think we will know exactly when Hank first tried and took the Q20's. I think it was sometime towards the end of 1999, maybe the autumn.
Regards,
Charlie

Peter,
To add to my last message, I now remember being at Arbiter on a separate earlier occasion with Hank, just prior to the Arbiter worshop tour. I remember sitting at a table programming Q2's until around 8pm, and I had a gig in Bishop's Stortford to do the same night! Was this short tour during the summer of 1998?

Charlie

Hi Scott,
For those that didn't see the pic, it was Hank with the guitar, with Peter and myself.
Peter deleted his message to save his storage space. One pic shows a Q20 to prove that the date of the Q2/Q20 changeover was November 1999, probably the 24th.

Charlie

Hi Charlie,
The way he was holding on to your shoulder I thought he was just another 'hanger on' that wanted to have his picture taken with you!!
Best regards,
Baz.

Hi Baz,
I'm not sure how many would want their photo taken with me. Still, I think Hank is very good like that, I'm sure he is very accomodating with such requests from many people, going by the number of pics I've seen posted by fans seen with him.
Not sure about the 24th for the Q2/Q20 changeover now because I checked and it was a Wednesday. More likely it was the Tuesday 23rd November 1999.
Regards,
Charlie
