Hi, I'm still pondering whether to spend the money on the H&C Echo to add to my growing collection of machines...
One question that bothers me slightly....from the recordings that I have heard it seems that there is a fair amount of built in compression taking place on the attack of the notes....particularly
when the bridge pickup is in use....resulting in an initial 'quack' to the tone ....
Have any owners used the unit with guitars other than Strats please?....Gisbon/PRS with full humbuckers....where the pickup output will be significantly higher than the single coils of
a Strat.....I think that the compression effect will be even more noticeable?......
I'd be grateful for owners opinions on this aspect if possible please?..
Cheers, Paul

Hi Paul, I know you are seeking answers from owners as you request, but as the designer of the preamp in the Hall & Collins unit, I designed it to emulate the Meazzi Echomatic 2 valve preamp, which does not have compression as part of its design. It does have low headroom of around 600mv peak on the positive side of the guitar signal, just like the earthed cathode valve design of the Meazzi, so with a large signal (typically only heavy chord playing on a Strat) soft clipping on one side of the signal can occur. I think any perception of compression is probably an increase of harmonics in the midrange. It will be interesting to see what others think, which I hope will enable you to decide one way or the other. Regards, Charlie

I know the HCSE was meant to get as close as possible to the sound of The Shadows but how close can you get with this unit to the sound of those wonderful Scandinavian bands as The Violents, The Moonriders, Group 1961, The Quiets to name but a few?

Hi Instrorocker, The Long Tom patches will do the 1961 echo sounds very nicely. Not sure if the other bands you mention use or used a Long Tom. Regards, Charlie

Thank you Charlie, so achieving the sound of "1961" could be another reason to convince the misses to get one of your units Seems that most popular tape echo among rautalanka guitarists would be the Pearl Echo Orbit EO-301. The Roland units like RE-201 Space Echo are also popular. Regards, Instrorocker

Hi Instrorocker, We included a Pearl Echo Orbit patch in the Hall & Collins Signature Echo unit, mainly to appeal to guitar players in Finland. Also, the RE-301 patches included in our unit could easily be altered to the RE-201 sounds and saved in the User bank if the delay times are known. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie, I notice you included the Klemt for Bombora, I always wondered what the Atlantics used for that, I thought it sounded like the FBI echo Matthew

Hi Matthew, The delay taps for the Klemt are fairly equally spaced and there is no feedback on the Bombora patch. It's not a sound I would have ever wanted to use for anything without knowing what it was used for but the Atlantics certainly made it work. Regards, Charlie

Hi instrorocker, many of the Scandinavian bands used Binson Echorc on their initial early 1960`s recordings. The Violents lead guitarist Hasse Rosèn used a Binson through a Fender TwinAmp. Lead guitarist Henrik Granö in the finnish group The Sounds had the same set-up. They both play with similarly tone and sound. Henrik, also a talented violin player, was only 16 years old at the time of recording "Emma" "Lonely Guitar" "Troika" "Mandschurian Beat" "Golden Earrings". Check out Youtube, for samples to watch and hear. The HCSE unit has more than ten different Echorec head settings programmed. As you and Charly rightly pointed out, rautalanka groups of modern time preferably use tapemachines like Roland and Orbit. Cheers alisap

Hi Charlie, great to see what a versatile unit this HCSE is
Hi Alisap, thanks for the info on the early 60's echo machines used up in the North, I have always loved that typical sound.
Knowing this, my appetite for a Hall & Collins Signature Echo has been whet even more
regards, Instrorocker

Hi Alisap,
You are correct about the echo unit and amp used by The Violents. However, The Sounds used first an Echolette echo and a Philips amp. Beginning with their third single they used Binson and Fender Twin Amp, this happened after they had seen The Violents perform live in Sweden. Of the tunes you listed, only Lonely Guitar is played on Binson + Fender Twin.

Hi Rolf, thanks for new and correct info concerning The Sounds amp + echo set-up used on their Fontana label recordings. I take that also the flipside to "Lonely Guitar", "Kulkuri/Wanderer" was recorded with Binson.

Hi Alisap,
Emma / Mandshurian Beat, Golden Earrings/Night Run and Kulkuri (=The Wanderer)/Troika are recorded using Echolette & Philips amp, the rest are with Binson & Twin Amp. Regards Rolf
