Hi Rob Your playing is fine but listening on my iPad I can only just hear the backing track.
Overall fine just get the mix more balanced either turn the guitar down or the backing up but be careful you don't go over the top.
Far better to turn things down than up.

Hi Istvan,
Thanks for the nice words about my recording!
Hi Alan,
The trouble with the original recording as a BT is when I turn it up more, Hanks part which is very low in the mix but still present, would/could be "disturbed" my sound and give the impression it hides my sound to much.... errr difficult for me to explain what I think in my own Dutch language....but I hope it's clear.
Anyway thanks for the nice words Alan!
Cheers Rob

Hi rob I know it’s been a while since you created this post I’ve just come across it Great sound The gallop part is how hank describes how to play it in that Interview. Ive slowed the original track down and it doesn’t sound like He plays the double hit on the c note of the A string but could do in parts. I’m still trying Great recording Mick Sheffield

I’ve just slowed it down again and I don’t think He plays the gallop at all like he says on his video Mick

Hi Rob, very impressive tone/sound in my opinion Apache is the most difficult to get right tone and sound wise, very good, as someone pointed out re gallop, I guess only us Shads fanatics would notice the incidental details but most wouldn't, well done. going back to the gallop, Hank himself has played it differently on a few occasions, listen to the early live in South Africa and ABC performances, not to mention the actual recording :-) cheers Pete

Yes rob Pete is spot on about you’re tone I’ve just got some pain free use out of my fretting hand so have started playing again and am having looking at the gallop again to try and get some sort of order from it, if you can that is. Pete on the American interview on YouTube where Hank demonstrates his gallop does he actually use that patern And I would love to know Robs set up Thanks again Rob Mick Sheffield

Hi all
Read with much interest ( the bit about the galloping sound ) Does anyone who plays this tune ( and I suppose we all do or have at some point ) think that Hank on the original 1960 version muted the strings lightly with the palm of his right hand while playing the galloping bit. I played it like that for years ( it sort of gave the echo Binson T7E sound a bit more oomph ) but now I'm using Hall and Collins unit I'm not sure whether it should be muted or not. Anyone ?

Hi Colin, no doubt , opinion plays its part for sure re the gallop technique, on the record, the technique sound like he dampens the strings, as you would on the bridge 'but not overly done' as in the FBI damped notes. I remember seeing the Shadows on the 'change of address' tour and Hanks gallop technique was quite a way from the original, he tended to use the second note for longer periods, difficult to explain in text. just to add, I don't thing there is any gallop on the first notes only the second, the first string is only hit once. Thanks guys for those nice words about my sound and playing, really appreciated ! My set up was a genuine 1958 strat with 14-62 strings, H&CSE, Vox AC15H1TV,mike and a MD recorder. I'm just playing along with the BT....kinda live....

Hello Rob,
Well I thought your whole performance was very good and I really liked your sound.
I was surprised, however, to see that you didn’t use either a Gemini or Charlie’s Cutting Edge effect. Having had the parts for a Cutting Edge for 9 years in a bag, only last month my friend volunteered to put it together for me ... I just can’t do soldering. So the question I have is, are these effects now obsolete? Is there a special tone built into the H&CSE to cover Apache? Perhaps the amp you use was the extra ingredient. Cheers
Mick

Hi Mick, Thanks for the compliments, really nice to read! Many moons ago I ask Charlie, if the awaited H&CSE would have a kind of cutting edge bouild in in the future echo....Charlie answered that it wasn't exactly needed because of the design of the unit. The amp is very good equiped with a few switches, u can use for editing the sound...and for my ears I don't need the cutting edge, although a friend build one for me and it's nice gizmo on it's own....The gemini I only tried once, but couldn't purchage one because they wasn't fabricated anymore. Here is a file I didn't even use a amp or mike...and not a valve in the picture either.. Just a slapboard strat (1960) with also 14-62 strings, the H&CSE and a AcTone, direct into a Boss BR1600cd recorder also live with the BT... Witch DoctorCheers Rob

Hello Rob,
Yes, and yes again, the percussive plectrum strike you used was just perfect and the overall sound was just right too. Nice job all round. I use upstrokes quite a bit on this tune, with aggression and with flesh of the forefinger just touching the string after the strike to get a similar effect to you. Same method also used when playing the frightened city.
I listened to your first recording again to compare the two tunes. They are quite different and you brought out the characteristics of each...... and yet It wasn’t effects that made the difference as you used virtually the same set up. So you proved it all in the fingers. Well done.,
Cheers
Mick

Mick, thank you very much for the compliments! I don't know what to say....it's just the way I think I should play these tunes..... Picking the strings upwards I do that with Cavatina because it's easier to control the tone and attack in combination with the volume pedal.... There are a few things that helps too....like using the exact same guitar Hank used for the original....and other original equipment.... Cheers Rob

Blimey....more then 2000 visitors in this thread about my humble version of Apache....I couldn't dream about that when I posted it 3 years ago! Although I added along the discussion about my sound, Witch Doctor and Cavatina...when this threat was discovered by Mick. It seem that large portion of visitors happen to visit during the past 9 months. I'm very honoured and grateful so many have visit this thread and hopefully enjoyed my humble playing and sound! I'm looking forwards to more visits and people enjoy my recordings and maybe(wishful thinking)they post a commend or two. Thank You!!
Cheers Rob
