Hi Joe, I started playing this stuff when I was about 11. You have better equipment than I had at the time! As far as the guitar is concerned I think a good sounding Strat can get you close to the sounds you are looking for, after all, Hank used stock Strats in the 60s. A lot of it is playing in the right style and knowing how to set the guitar and amp controls. However, I don't know much about the pickups that come with your guitar. They could already be very good or some might suggest changing them at some point. I don't know at the moment. You don't say if you want to play other types of music. If you only want to play Hank and Shadows you need to decide what gauge of strings to use and this will partly depend on which tunes you want to play ie. early or later Shadows/Hank or all. String sets can be from 10s up to 13s. The heavier strings are harder to play. 11s would probably be a good starting point if you don't want to play any other styles. When you decide what gauge and brand and type to use, you need to have the guitar set up for that gauge and this includes setting up the tremolo so the bridge is floating properly. With the amp, you will need to set the treble low as the Zoom G2 with EFTP is quite bright sounding, which alone is not what you want for Hank's sounds. Let us know what you make of what I have said and any questions you might have, then we can go further. Regards, Charlie.

Good info from Charlie Joe, if you're playing the Shadows earlier tunes, you will get a closer sound with a wound G, plenty of guys here to help with that sound though.

Hiya Joe, And welcome to the forum. If you just search around the forum at your leisure you can learn an awful lot about playing Shadows music. At the end of the day it's all down to you and how you play, with a lot of help from your equipment. You won't have any problem picking up the playing side, you're at that brilliant age when you soak information up like a sponge and practice every chance you get - I used to drive my parents mad. One little bit of gear that will help you is a Caline 10 Band EQ pedal at about £30, I was amazed at how much difference it made. Have a look at this link: charliehall.proboards.com/post/166390You've got a Fender and a Vox and an EFTP Echo unit, so you're already nearly there. Good luck, Len

Hi Charlie, I want to try and learn all the Shadows Hits and Hanks hits when he goes solo. I love the sound of hanks guitar on the 2004 final tour, but the 2009 one sounds even better! All I am interested in is playing the shadows/hank. The strings I use are 10s. Thank you for helping me out! I will definatly be back in touch with other questions haha.
Cheers Charlie Joe

Hi Joe, You might need a little more mids in the EQ with 10s. I play a custom gauge set that is close to 10s but I have Fender Custom Shop Fat 50s pickups, which do have a little more mids. I find that helps to make the 10s sound heavier than they really are. Maybe if you can make a short recording and post a link to it here we can help you to fine tune your technique and sound. Regards, Charlie

Hi Joe, You won't get the best recording taking a direct signal from the G2. Do you have a decent mic so you can record your amp? Regards, Charlie

Hi Joe, Why not let us know some of the USB mics you have been looking at, then we can let you know what we think. Bear in mind that the amp needs to be working fairly hard for best results, which may be limited by your location, neighbours etc. Regards, Charlie

Hi Joe,
Reference your recording problem from Zoom G2 you didn't say what recording software you're using.

Hi Joe, Re the G2 recording issue. Are you using Windows and connecting the G2 via a known good USB cable ? If so, then Windows should recognize the G2 as a USB Audio device and this should be selectable as a recording device in Cubase. Pretty straight forward (haha), so if Cubase is not recording the G2 signal then it is indeed an excellent problem solving riddle for a budding IT Technician. If you can provide more details I'm sure we can track it down. Regards George

The basic G2 doesn't have a USB socket but does have a head phone socket which can be used to connect to the line-in socket on a PC. For recording I connect the head phone socket on my amp to the line-in on my PC.

Hi Tony, Thanks for pointing that out. I have the G2.1u which has USB. Amazed that the G2 doesn't.
Should make tracking this down even easier.
