Hi Charlie
We have received some sad news that Les Green the lead guitarist with the legendry Denvermen from the sixties has passed away . The Denvermen were very popular Australian surf band and one of my favourite bands from that wonderfull instrumental period of the sixties they produced some beautiful melodies such as Surfside, Blue Mountais Avalon Stomp and many others
At our January Brsibane Shadows Players we had an Australian music day and I played three Denvermen tunes which did bring back some great memories of the sixties having played them first time around fifty plus years ago Regards John

Really sad news. Great band from the 60’s who backed Digger Revell, also backed a Kiwi rocker Johnny Devlin who later became their manager and producer, Johnny along with Nat Kipner also wrote the tune Surfside and also Lisa Maree (named after his youngest daughter). They did a great version of The Fentones tune "The Mexican" and a Fireballs tune "Vaquero" on their first album. Les has said that his main influence was Duane Eddy and he mainly used Gibson guitars although he used a Fender Stratocaster on occasions combined with an Fender amplifier and Echolette. Geoff

Les Green played a Gibson ES355 (non stereo - with Gretsch knobs) and a Maestro stereo amplifier. Later in their career Les played a Fender Jaguar and a Stratocaster. I saw them a number of times, first must have been in early 1963 at the Police Boys Club in Canberra. Les' Gibson was the reason I bought a Gibson ES335 as my first professional guitar. I also managed to acquire a 35 watt Gibson stereo amplifier, a combo equivalent of Les' Maestro amplifier. I never saw Les use a Fender amp, however, Tex ihasz, the other guitarist played a dark red Stratocaster with a Fender amplifier - I think it may have been a Bandmaster? Les also used an Echolette and Tex used a Dynacord. Just about every guitar player in those days ended up with an Echolette. I still have my original Gibson 335 and Echolette.
