It is almost unbelievable that it is a year to the day since the Hall and Collins Signature Echo was launched and the first ones were dispatched. Since then hundreds and hundreds have been sent to customers in all parts of the world. Units have been shipped to Tasmania, Denmark, Canada, USA, Malaysia and virtually everywhere in between! John and I have been and still are delighted with the fantastic response we have had to the unit, as well as the packaging and service we have been able to offer. We would like to thank every one who has purchased the unit for your custom and also your continuing support and confidence in our product which is still selling well, and we will be spending the coming months and years developing more products, so watch this space!
Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie and John. Congratulations and "Happy Birthday". The HCSE is truly amazing and my unit has given me so much pleasure and enjoyment here in Japan. I'm so happy and grateful that you both persevered - I'm sure there were many frustrations during the creative process. I'm looking forward to your next creation!! Thanks again. Dave

Thank you to everyone for your supportive messages!
Hi Didier, I don't know the exact figure but I think it is more than half of the target I initially set to decide whether it was worthwhile to John and myself to produce the unit.

Hi Adrian, Nothing is definite but we are looking into a rack mount version with studio features and MIDI control. Then probably other effects like overdrive, and maybe a versatile interface for recording direct from a guitar. If there is anything else that could be worth looking into let's have some ideas! Regards, Charlie

A 10 band programmable EQ could be good if the filters can remain analogue, which might be possible. Regards, Charlie

Or "V" style amp modeler stomp box tailored to Hank fans I know Wampler and Tech 21 make one, they are generic pretty much Matthew

Hi Matthew, That was also something I was keen to have a go at but only if I can get it to sound like an old AC15 with the EF86 channel. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie
I love my H&C unit.
The idea of a modeller with the AC15/EF86 would have me first in the queue. Interesting that Vox mentioned this feature for their AV series of amps, but no mention of Hank and co.

Hi Charlie, John Happy anniversary to the Hall & Collins Signature Echo and my heartiest congratulations, once again, to you both! My unbounded enthusiasm for this amazing kit is already well documented on these boards. From the start, when I first heard the prototype perform, I knew this had to be a successful venture which would appeal to a wide range of players. So happy to have been proved correct. Indeed, the message continues to spread around the musical world so who knows what may still lie ahead. Can't wait to see what's next up those sleeves of creativity Best regards, Mike

I am looking at emulating the Vox EF86 channel (the old design version, not a reissue that has different circuit values) with solid state circuitry, in a similar way to how I emulated the grounded cathode 12AX7/ECC83 input valve of the Echomatic 2 in the Hall & Collins unit. After some tests I am ready to study the behaviour of the real EF86 in a Vox circuit design and compare notes with what I have so far, maybe in the next 2-3 weeks. Just so non technical players will know, there is some distortion (but still essentially clean sounding) from the EF86 circuit but the real overdrive sounds come from turning up the volume control to drive the power amp output to distortion, which happens easily since there is so much gain from the EF86. What I am looking to do for the moment is to replicate the cleanish distortion of the EF86, and look at the heavier overdriven sound of a whole amp later on. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie. Is it too early to put my name down for one? Good luck with the development of this new unit! Bet wishes, Dave

Hi Dave, Far too early at this stage! I've got to be satisfied that it does what it is supposed to do, and I won't release anything that doesn't. Also, it is just a part of what will probably be a complete set of stages, maybe with some kind of switching system that turns off the parts you don't need, depending on what you want. For example if you want to use it with an existing amp, or don't use an amp at all. I'll keep posting as it develops (if it works and sounds as I hope it will, and I will also report failures if any, too). Regards, Charlie

I have looked at two different amps with EF86 channels, one an AC15 circuit 3 clone, the other an early 60s Vox AC10 that has much the same preamp as the circuit 2 AC15 from 1959. The AC10 had 2 X 10" Elac speakers and it sounded wonderful for Apache. It had a bit more low end than the required sound for Wonderful Land which works better with the brilliance setting of the EF86 channel of a circuit 3 amp, or a top boost channel with the bass turned off, much as I had long suspected. The EF86 distorts much differently (very asymmetrical clipping ie, soft clips on one half of the signal much earlier than the other half) to the circuit 3 clone amp. I am close to replicating both sounds with solid state circuits. I have come to the firm conclusion that EQ, even multi band graphic EQ, is not anywhere near as effective as generating the correct harmonics and then fine tuning with relatively simple tone controls. EQ simply is not a substitute for having the right harmonics generated by the amp stage(s). So the final design(s) might not need such complicated EQ. I also might do a top boost channel emulation next. I am thinking it would be good to have all three channels in one unit. Such designs could be very useful for adding to an existing amp as a pedal in the chain, or as an additional device for recording purposes. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie, I found this on national valve museum website it is a mullard 5-10 amp incorporating ef86 pre-amp www.r-type.org/articles/art-003e.htm might provide some useful reading. Steve.
