Hi Scott,
I think Apache must have been the first recording with the Echomatic 1. As far as hit singles go, Frightened City was probably the last with that unit. I don't think the first Cliff album had any echo at all (plenty of reverb though), but I could be wrong.
The Echomatic 2, as well as the Echomatic 1, was on a number of tracks on the first Shadows album. I think that was around 1961. The Savage was probably the first single with the Echomatic 2, and Kon-Tiki, which I think came later. It is easy to think that Wonderful Land was the first to feature the Echomatic 2 because of the distinctive echo spacings, but Wonderful Land came out a bit later than the others didn't it?
Regards,
Charlie

Remember that Wonderful Land was recorded and lay in 'the can' for some time before Norrie added the strings prior to it's release.

Hi Alan,
Yes that is true. Do you think/know it was recorded earlier than The Savage and/or Kon-Tiki?

Charlie

Hi Alan,
Thanks for that info. I got it very wrong! Most interesting is that Frightened City was recorded after Kon-Tiki, so the Echomatic 1 was still in use even after the Echomatic 2 was used, but I knew that both units were used on the first album. One theory I had was that the Echomatic was no longer serviceable shortly after Frightened City was recorded, maybe it was on its last legs anyway.
Regards,
Charlie

Isn't it strange that "The Savage" was recorded and released nearly nine months before the film "The Young Ones" was put on general release (Feb 1962). Was this normal practice?

Although these (Message 6) were the recording dates, the singles were issued by EMI in the following order;
The Frightened City 1961
Kon Tiki 1961
The Savage 1961
Wonderful Land 1962

Hi Kevin,
The film version of The Savage was actually called Witchdoctor and was from a different take. The leads break is very different and well worth a listen if you have it.
Hi Alan,
I had always thought Kon-Tiki was released after the Savage so I got that wrong too. One way the reality makes sense though is that the echo is more or less in time with the tempo on The Savage, much in the same way that the echo is tempo related on Frightened City, which came probably last of the released recordings using the Echomatic 1.

Charlie

According to what Bruce wrote in his book, the Shadows thought that "The Savage" wasn't good enough to be released as a single, but Norrie Paramor released it on a single with "Peace pipe" while the Shadows were away on tour. When they came back they had the surprise to discover that "The savage" had been released, and was in the charts, selling rather well (it went up to #9).
Norrie Paramor having composed both tunes was certainly eager to get the corresponding royalties !...

Thanks guys,
Just back online, thats quiet interesting, i knew about wonderfulland being held back. I guess instead of just finishing with one unit and then on to the next there must of been a transition period, wonder if its aparent on any of cliffs stuff too, might have to have a look.

Hi Scott,
That might well be the case with Cliff's stuff but it would be harder to hear as Hank used less echo amount for Cliff tunes.

Charlie
