Hi Darrell, I will be demonstrating Wonderful Land but Atlantis was almost certainly recorded with a top boost amp so it would not really be appropriate to do that one. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie,
I am very glad to see that you overcame your health issues.
I just heard about your latest unit from a message on the SM website by Dave Robinson. Is there a picture of the unit we can see? I would like to be added to the list if it's not too late. I will mention your unit to the Surf music community in California and I am sure many would be interested in acquiring it.
Blessings, Abel

Hi Abel, Thank you. I feel much better than I did some years ago. I don't have a picture apart from a computer generated drawing which shows the casing with unfinished artwork which could be misleading, so I would prefer to have a pic of a real unit to show which isn't possible at this time as none have yet been produced. I have added you to the list, thank you. I was not aware that Surf players could be interested in Vox sounds, this is interesting to me. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie,
Will the unit work with other echo boxes or only with the H&C echo, as I don't own one. I only use the MagicStomp. Also, the clean channel of any amp will do, or only a VOX?
Blessings, Abel

Hi Charlie, I have a normal channel on my vox amp so I have no problem there. But sometimes I use other friends amps with no normal channel. I was wondering if the HCSE plus the EF86 project pedal working together would work OK in the FX loop which cuts the preamp of the amp. Regards Carl.

Hi Abel, Yes, the unit will work with any echo unit. I referenced the use of the normal channel of a Vox because it has a fairly flat response. Other amps, including Vox amps without a normal channel, would require some tweaking of the tone controls and gain settings if there are any, to approach something like a flat response and a clean sound. On most guitar amps that have tone controls this would mean having the mids set fairly high and the bass and treble controls set fairly low. Presence controls and bright switches should be set to minimum or off.
Hi Carl, The unit could work when its output is connected to the return of an amp's effects loop, cutting out the amp's own preamp as you say. Some effects loops may not be suitable, eg. some Matchless and Mesa Boogie amps because they could need a higher level of signal for best results.
Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie, I have been reducing my Guitar and Amp collection and a guy, As part exchange traded in a Headrush frfr Amp. Its first one have come across. As its a flat response full frequency amp, How do you think it will sound with the HCSE and EF86 project pedal. If you think it may work I will hang on to it, to give it a test. otherwise it will go with the rest of the gear I am selling off. Regards Carl.

Hi Carl, I think the Headrush should work extremely well. I was using a cheap Behringer powered mic stand monitor and getting good results at home. Keep in mind the Headrush will only really be useful for guitar use in conjunction with amp modelling devices. Regards, Charlie

Hi Mickael, I have some news but it's not all good, I'm afraid. Stephen at the factory has told me that the prototype casing that he is having made has a few problems with everything fitting properly because they now want the base of the unit to fit inside the top part. So it is looking like it will not be ready for Christmas, however, it should not be long into the new year when it will be ready. I can only apologise to everyone who was hoping to have their units by Christmas. I should be doing some more demo recordings this weekend. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie - hope you're recovered ok. Any chance of 'with and without EF86' demos when you get to it?

Hi Mike, The demos I already did used only the EF86 unit as an amp sim and without any other amp. a demo without the EF86 unit would be effectively connecting the guitar to the H & C then to the computer without any kind of amp sound at all, which I don't think would be very useful. What would be more useful would be to record the normal channel of an AC30 with and without the EF86 unit, with the speaker emulation turned off. The small problem with that though is that I don't own or have access to an AC30. Regards, Charlie

Would be good to catch up again

Hi Charlie, I hope you are well, and recovered from your debilitating sickness. Is there any more news on the EF86 project? Like we other musicians, you must be as keen as mustard to get the product up and ready for sale! The anticipation actually gives quite a tingle! As the Bishop etc etc etc. All the best, Milko

Hi Milko, Stephen at the factory is currently having to redesign the metal base of the unit as it was found to not fit correctly with the components in place. I hope it will be sorted out in about a week. Once that is sorted out it should then be able to go into production, but that will still take a few weeks more. Regards, Charlie

Hi Mick, I am hoping a cased prototype will be ready within about a week, although it will only be painted black with no artwork. I wanted to do some more recordings with the circuit board I already have but I have been busy with other things plus not been so well the last few days. I will try to record Apache soon. Hi Charlie, Hope you are keeping safe and healthy. Can you let me know the continuous power draw of the "EF86 Project" Pedal. I have a Fuel tank Chameleon supply for the "HCSE" although is only 300ma its working ok. Using power bricks tidies up excess cables. Will the "EF86 Project" pedal be a similar rating. Hoping your self, and all our friends stay Healthy. Regards Carl.

Hi Carl, Thanks. I am OK except I burnt my thumb doing some soldering nearly two weeks ago. It wasn't painful for a day or so and then it started. I t still a bit painful even now. I have a working black painted prototype EF86 Emulator unit now but I am not able to play the guitar to demo it just yet. I don't remember if we tested the current draw for the EF86 Emulator unit but I know it must be quite a bit less than for the HCSE unit because it contains no digital circuitry and therefore no 5 volt DC power requirement. I know John tested the continuous current draw for the HCSE and found it to be around 300ma, from memory. Your power unit would probably be stressed at power up time while the capacitors charge up, however it should have a much easier time powering the EF86 Emulator unit, while I suggest using something a bit heavier for the HCSE for longer term reliability. I remember John telling me he burnt out a 500ma supply simply by leaving it connected to the mains power for 24 hours and that was with nothing connected to its output. From that I figured the thinner transformer wire will overheat more easily even when not delivering any current. I think I reported a while back that we did test running both units from the same power supply and daisy chaining the cable to each unit but there was a bad hum that could not be eliminated so each unit has to have its own isolated supply. Regards, Charlie
