When the intruder runs away..........all is ok.......and you are a hero.
But, if you hit an intruder with anything that is to hand and cause him injury then the problems begin.
Cheers

Here in Holland it's much worse.... A camping owner did some maintenance in one of his toilet-buildings late night. He was working on some electrics, a burglar surprised him on gunpoint... The owner turned around a bit to hasty...the burglar shot at him twice and missed...the owner lashed out with the Philips-head screwdriver in panic... He wounded the burglar quit good, but not deadly....guess what.... The camping owner is doing time and has to pay the burglar his payment for years because the burglar claimed he can't work any-more.... matter of fact he didn't work ever before. The judge was firm about it, the camping owner had to know better because a pointy screwdriver can be a deadly weapon.... The gun was just a tool of the trade to bring fear, according the burglar and he tried to get a tax refund for the gun because of loss of a working tool.... It's mad world!!
Cheers Rob

In the U.K. you are allowed to use "reasonable force" in defence of your life. It is up to the court and the lawyers to decide what constitutes "reasonable force". A 5-iron should be OK, but a fairway-wood or driver might be considered excessive. DaveC.

Sandra our Laws are based on yours Westminster system but vary slightly state to state Victoria where I am is pretty bad we have a dictator Premier Daniel Andrews ( prick) who has clamped down on free speech and appointed judges who let car jackers and burgers out on good behaviour to to it again Matthew

Our laws have changed dramatically in my lifetime Matthew so I thought that yours may have still been more like ours were prior to us joining the EU in 1971, which seems to be around the time we started with the present day lunacy of law abiding people seemingly having fewer rights than the criminal fraternity have.

That sounds similar to the case we had here in the UK when Tony Martin shot at some burglars in 1999 Rob. There is an old English saying that says "The law is an a**" and cases like those prove it.
