I have many different sets on my Strats, but i am guessing you wont want to stretch your budget too much at first , I have a set of Ironstone Golds on one strat (about £35/40 I have a set of Fender 57/62's on another £120 + and Kinman on another, over £220 there are a lot of members who like and/or dislike Ironstones and as with all things its up to you and i must agree with what Paul has just said "Hi…..to be honest, any decent single coils are going to get you in the right ballpark….there’s a massive choice to choose from and a wide price range….if you’re in the U.K. then I’m sure another member will point you in the right direction….where to buy from is easy….what to buy is a little more difficult…..Cheers, Paul…."
the only thing I can suggest is listen to some sound files and if you like the sound, then ask the member what pu's and strings are being used best i can offer good luck with your search
Best wishes

Looking back on my pickup choices I think deciding how much you want to pay is the first question to ask yourself. Iron stones around £30 Tone Rider around £70 Fender £100 and upwards Kinman £200 and upwards I don’t have the most up to date prices and you can always go second hand I did listen to many sound files but they don’t always reflect the sound you will get but they do show you what’s possible. Don’t put a set in and think these are no good, there’s loads more to do changing heights and amp and effect settings and probably some more. You could end up with quite a few pickup sets or like me a few strats What you hear from the sound files is not what you will instantly get. If you are intending on just getting your guitar up to your satisfaction find a set you know someone has got right with and in your price range Then your guitar will be finished and the next jobs which can be more expensive than the whole guitar , can begin. If I started again I would put a set in and start getting what I can out of them You can keep trying pickups only to go back to the first set and the only thing you’ve really done is got better at setting things up. Let us know how you get on Mickhunt Sheffield

There is a wide range of pickups at varying prices and I'm not sure the high price of some pickups are worth what you pay. I have a set of Artec vintage pickups with staggered poles costing £36.74 and they are just as good as another strat of mine with Fender 57/62 pickups costing £170/180. There are Wilkinsons pickups similar to the Artec but wound a bit hotter also £36.74 and both from Northwest Guitars.

Iron stone Golds are ,for the money, excellent, they will give you the Marvin sound to such degree that another £150 will need to be spent to better them, I replaced the P.Ups on a 1991 Mexican Strat with these golds and the difference was quite amazing. They have the added benefit of being able to push in ( or retract ) the poles depending on a wound third string ( or not ), the poles are individually wound so can be staggered ( as Barry above says). I also have two American Strats with *posh* pickups that sound NO better . MAYBE if you play then thro a 25,000 Watt system there may be a slight difference but normal playing volumes: ie: neighbours only complain 2 streets away, no difference. Do yourself a favour and buy a set of Ironstone Golds, you will be chuffed to little nuts,
BTW. I have NO tie-up with Ironstone whatsoever. they are just good.
Regards Frank

Frank is spot on about the iron stone golds and they will wire you a pick guard up with different switching options like the neck and bridge together or blended

Hi, The poles don’t have individual windings, ie 6 separate windings, they have the single normal common winding that goes round all the poles but the actual magnets can be adjusted in height…

I agree with all of the above and have been around the block many times to only come back to the start again. I ended up with Tonerider Pure Gold, mainly because that have a dropped pole under the 3rd string for a plain 3rd string. All of the above are good and can't knock the Ironestone's, they are really good too. Don't forget when listening to sound files from other guitarists, the sound of their pickups is reflected by both what amplifier they are using and how they have got it set, what string size, and how they have got their pickups set up. They might not sound the same for you on your equipment.
I wish you good luck with your quest.

Another consideration is whether you want standard old school single coils or the more modern noise cancelling pups. With the original style you’ll pick up extraneous noise in positions 1,3 and 5 as they are the connections for just one of the pups…..and S/Cs are great receivers for hums and buzzes…..positions 2 and 4 bring in combined pups using the middle pup which is usually reverse wound and hence those positions are quiet…..
Noise cancelling pups, which look like typical S/Cs are actually stacked humbucker S, but due to the design they keep the brightness of tone…..Kinman, Fender, Barden and others are popular choices….
Finally one maker, EMG, which I used for any years in the clubs, make active pups…noise cancelling, low impedance output…no loss of treble with long leads and they sound pretty good…..I had the EMG-SA version in white…..great pickups even if they look a little odd…..one downside is you have to change the PP3 battery under the pick guard every year really…..
That’s all folks!
Cheers, Paul, Bristol……

Are they discontinued, or could they be the set now called Pure Vintage? Len

I think Roger means Ironstone Gold pickups and Tonerider have the Vintage pickups.

Stu's Dad and barryg,
My apologies. I meant to say that Toneriders 'Pure Vintage' pickups are what I use (available through Amazon).
I got the names mixed up between Ironstone's 'Gold' and Tonerider's 'Pure Vintage'.
Senior moment I think, sorry about that.
