Hi Guys Just wanted to let you know about SSD drives..if you are going to save your precious tunes of the Shadows and others. Well, this is going to be shocking to you and I discovered it just last week. I always try to back up my Midi files, Backup of UBHank tracks, and movies. So I bought a 16 TB SSD drive.
My friend did the same thing one week after me. He tried to back up 1200 files of heavy volumes. Then he tried to play some movies he had backed up.
Guess what... After 50 gigabytes, the other files were unreadable by VLC! And some files we had on the root of the SSD were unreadable! It seems that the indexation was not recognized anymore!
So, a word of advice..do not buy any SSD USB drive (They are cheap in China and Amazon site). The hard external drive you have is a better solution! Also, one can watch on youtube by a guy that discovers that the SSD on the unit is a MICRO SD card!!
Sorry to let you hear about that..but you have been advised. Sheendigs

Cheap Chinese knock off garbage purposely misreprepresented to a propective buyer--caveat emptor!

The thing I said is that they have not tested the unit to its full capacity..as one says 'They assumed' that it would work! As everything is made in China, one could have had the same problem with a well-renowned trademark. Anyway, I have returned the product today. I will stick to an external hard drive in the future! I have two laptops with SSD's, two PC's each with SSD's for C & D drives I also have 4 external USB non SSD for projects and archives, I have four SSD's which are all clones (in case of ransomware lockups)of my music pc & day-day work horse pc and all of them function well, All Samsung 750 EVO.
Its a big mistake to use huge multi Tb drives as one single failure will destroy everything so use many smallers ones....then back up again...

Hi Mike I have a friend that also has an Internal SSD drive..made by a reputable company. They seem to be different internally with Huge secure memory.
Would you be able to record lots of files (music, films, and what you prefer)..on one of your external SSD that has 1TO or more??
Then please check to see if around 50 Gigabytes..the successive file are readable?
If everything is okay..then your SSB USB has been well tested by the manufacturer.
If we had not done what I explained, we would have 'assumed' that our backups were fine. Let us know afterward.. as lots of us are interested in the results. Sheendigs

Hi Sheendigs,
Having just upgraded to a system which is all SSD storage, I read this with interest, my computer has 1 TB onboard and there are two 1 TB backup drives (LaCie)!
I don't have long term experience, but my research into this suggest that they are a lot faster and more reliable i.e no moving parts and the surface wear of an HDD. Like any drive they have a finite life expectancy (stated as being longer than HDD) and no doubt quality plays a part.
However, your experience seems to be related to the SSD controllers ability to read/write reliably to the drive beyond a certain capacity, at present you seem to be of view that this is limited to 50 GB. What I believe may be happening is that the device/SSD controller is trying to handle management of 15 TB and you have reached a level where it’s struggling to cope at 50 GB (it could be the SSD controler/ device or both), this doesn’t necessarily mean that if you say reformat them to individual 1 TB partitions the same thing will happen.
Rather than "throwing the baby our with the bathwater”, I would be inclined to re-format the drive with a 1 TB partition and see if that works, if it does the answer if to create a number of partions. As you're mainly using this for archiving material the quality may not be an issue as you are likely to write once or twice and mainly read the drive!
Hope this will be of help.
Gary

I omitted to explain that my "external" SSD's are actually for internal use, so when "Cloning" my C & D drives. ie I install them into my various USB "Caddys" and clone them, my current cloned SSD "C" drive is 273Gb and no problem with reading all data.

Hi Gary, Thanks for the info. Yep, the SSD drives are faster. The device controller must have been the problem. I assumed that it would be able to control the indexation. I will tell my friend to partition several ones on his SSD. And try again to copy a ton of files. On the same occasion, I have a 1TO SSD that we will copy the files and see what comes out of that experience. Sheendigs

Mike. Hi Mike, OKay, your SSD'S are still external - on caddys. If you have successfully worked with them at great capacity..then, you are not having any problems. Sheendigs

Hi Sheendigs, I think you may be wasting your time hoping to solve the 50 Gb mystery.
I have seen on the 'net so called 16Tb SSD drives for less than $50 and I assume this is what you and friend have bought ?
Consider that the largest portable USB SSD drive that Samsung offers is 2 Tb at about $450.
What are the chances a 16 TB drive could be supplied for a tenth of that ?
It seems these drives you have are a fraud and consist of a fancy case with internally a couple of micro cards totaling around 50 - 80 Gb. The firmware in the case is hacked so that the OS sees the drive capacity as 16 TB. However, when there is any attempt to write beyond the actual capacity of, in your case 50 Gb, it can't be done.
Not good news but .. so much fraud and fake stuff on the Internet these days.
As mentioned by others better to buy multiple (if needed) 1 or 2 Tb SSD drives from any of the reputable suppliers. The competition ensures they can be had for a reasonable price if you shop around.
Regards George

Hi George,
Yes, we did buy an SSD for around 65$ CAD.
The thing is that we never read any feedback from anybody mentioning any problems after having saved a lot of files.
The buyers must have assumed that everything was ok. Obviously, we would not have bought this SSD - knowing what we know now.
The firmware must be non-existent to control the drive capacity. There could be a micro sd card inside..I did not open the case to verify that. (Somebody else did that on Youtube).
At least, I think I did the right thing to share my experience with future potential buyers of SSD (of that kind). A little help is worth the satisfaction.

Bad news with the 1TB SSD drive. The same problems happen. After 32 gigabytes..the next file could not be read! No problem with my new External Hard drive of 5 TB..works like a charm. So this ends the SSD saga... I have learned my lesson. Sheendigs

Hi Sheendigs, I'm not sure which lesson you have learned Are you saying you bought a 1 TB SSD from a similar or same source ? If so then it most likely will be a 32 Gb micro card in the case. Or, did you buy a brand name SSD from Samaung or similar .. from a reputable dealer and had this issue ? Samsung et al have been supplying millions of !Tb and larger portable SSD's for years. It is quite mature technology. Internal SSDs even more so. I have 2 x 1TB internal SSD and they both work fine in a USB 3.0 portable enclosure as well as in the PC. Regards George Forgot to mention, if you are only using the external drives as archive or backup or reading audio and video files, then standard hard drives are a much cheaper option.

Hello George, I bought a 1 TB SSD about three months ago not from the same source..from another company. I guess that by now..it must be the same company that makes all those SSD. So when I discovered the problem with my friend, I thought 'Hum! Let me check the full capacity of that 1 TB SSD'..and we know the result as stated in my last writing.
As you say Samsung has been supplying millions of portable and internal SSD - but not the one I bought (There is no name on it! - not so reputable as we now know)
So, I went back to using an external hard drive - which works without a hitch! One day, perhaps I will buy a reputable external SSD when the price is reasonable. Sheendigs
