Hi Colin,
Some guitars are painted in urethane finish and this paint is very durable, hard wearing, and resistant to UV light. The older paint type is cellulose and this is used for some finishes. Cellulose paint is a air drying paint and usually sprayed onto a surface and is not easily applied by brush due to it's quick drying properties. Cellulose was used as a car refinish product but has been discontinued due to environmental issues. It's an easy product to spay with a spray gun or even an aerosol can for small items and it's possible to spray a guitar body this way if you are competent at doing so. The downside to cellulose is it isn't very resistant to UV light and certain colours will fade quite badly and quickly if exposed to sunlight. The coating is quite brittle when it's dried and can chip easily so it's not the most durable finish to use. Modern paints are so much better today but cellulose can still be bought in a aerosol can.
If you want to respray your guitar look for a small local car bodyshop and see if they would paint it for you. a music shop will probably have somewhere where they will get a guitar painted but they will send it out to be done and add their percentage.
