Demos on utube from NAMM are not good, hopeless in fact. I tried the earlier Replicator units based on a tape cassette system and they were not very impressive at all. New Binson is £1499 at Andertons , need to try one really before spending that amount of dosh !

Following the first YT video B’s Music Shop went back to hear more of the T-Rex Binson, the comments are quite interesting: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cs_w4XQE6yMThe link in the first post caught my attention, if you click the reply under the second post on that YT video it states it’s a unit built by Marcello Patruno from NOS Binson parts when the factory closed, apparently these sell for 5-6k (doesn’t say what currency)! I also came across this YT video which is a very interesting history of the Binson that I had not seen before: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWxirGNeBvcThis is yet another video comparing pedals against the real deal, at one point they play a few notes of “Wonderful Land” (don’t blink though): www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzgllPfulP4There is certainly something very special about a vintage Binson if you have the budget! As for a lesser mortal like myself, I’m still extremely happy and enjoying my recent purchase of a Strymon Volante, but have still kept my little Catlinbread Echorec!

How`s it going Gary.
I had a look at some demos of the Strymon and the Catalinbread and they both sound great, but I would be interested to find out what your thoughts are on both of them. For instance, is one of them better than the other in any way or, do you have a preference for one or the other etc. I just thought that as you`ve got both of them, you would be the best person to ask. I would love to get my hands on one of those Binson`s but the price is a bit over the top for me.
Many thanks and regards
Adrian

Hi Adrian, Good to hear from you again, without doubt the Strymon Volante is the one I would highly recommend, I recently pointed Darrell in this direction and he has written to me several times saying how thrilled he is with it! If you read my previous threads this in my opinion has the tone and character that is so elusive, here are some demo videos done by Dave Robinson: www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-huePyuD40www.youtube.com/watch?v=4j_lMHeLkXIwww.youtube.com/watch?v=v0HZJ4rrZq8If you look on his YT page you will find a couple more! Best regards Gary PS; Just to add that the Volante is far more than a "one trick pony" and it's well worth running through the specifications: www.strymon.net/product/volante/

Thanks for the reply Gary and it`s good to hear from you too, hope you`re well.
I had a feeling you were going to say that about the Strymon, I had a look at those links you posted and some others and it does sound great.
A friend of mine has got a Boss RE202 space echo and I had a chance to play around with it recently and that also sounds great but it`s not easy there`s a lot of tweaking involved and I`m sure the Strymon is probably much the same. I`ve had a clear-out recently I`ve sold a few pedals that I`m no longer using and some other bits and pieces and now I`m looking for another toy to play with that`s why asking these questions, at this stage I`m leaning towards the Strymon but I`m still not sure yet. It`s a blessing to be a part of this forum where I can always get help and advice.
Cheers for now.
Adrian

I came across this early SOS review of the Volante Adrian, which pretty much sums up the way I feel about mine: www.soundonsound.com/reviews/strymon-volanteYou’ll notice that at the end he describes the Catlinbread Echorec as notable, I got mine before the Volante came out and one of the things that attracted me to it was being an analogue unit. It sounds very good in doing what it says on the tin, but it has no pre-sets and can be a bit fiddly. Plus other settings require opening up the back to adjust pots (you don’t have to this). Price is around £199.00! The Volante in many ways has achieves a unique combination of affordability, it has a Class A JFET analogue input path with the combination of digital, which does a lot for tone/character and everything is pretty much accessible with it being able to store up to 8 repeats on board (this will pretty much have you covered for Shads material). The four heads are individual switchable for levels and each has its own feedback control, the heads also have the option of Drum, Tape and Echo which make it very versatile. Price around £429.00! I think you will find the Strymon more logical in terms of settings, it’s more like a vintage unit, if you get one send me a PM! Regards Gary

Thanks again for the reply Gary.
That was aa great review I also listened to the deomo`s on the Strymon site and it really does sound great. I also read on their site that in addition to the 8 repeats, there are another 292 repeats via midi?? I`m not sure what that`s all about I`ll have to look into it a bit further anyway, I`ll let you know what I end up doing.
Cheers for now
Adrian

Hi Adrian,
To use the other 292 presets you need to connect via MIDI and use a computer, but I don't think you will need to do this as many settings for Shadows numbers are common, with maybe some adjustment of Rec and Echo Levels.
There is some talk that Strymon are going be releasing a software editor for the Volante, if they do this will almost certainly be USB and give access to the extra presets.
You get a power supply and a USB C lead with it if you have a new'sh spec computer.
Regards
Gary

You'd need to read through the threads but Dave Robinson gives some excellent suggestions to get started on the Volante. It's not a list of numbers with their settings but he explains how to go about it. Len

more about strymons than binsons on this.if the strymons as good as everybody says why would you spend a small fortune buying a remake of something so unreliable ? old technology !

Hi Andy,
Perhaps the question should be how well does the T-Rex Binson compare to a refurbished vintage unit or the NOS versions that were built by Marcello Petruno after the Binson factory closed, at this end of the market one is probably looking at well healed enthusiasts, collectors or studio use, those who are seeking the optimal characteristics and nuance of the original vintage units. Certainly there was/is some sonic magic in the Binson head design that is very much sought after, I’m sure there will be a lot more interest and discussion once people start getting their hands on them!
I’ve read that the Marcello units are progressive in that they are possibly the way the original units would have evolved if the Binson factory hadn’t closed down, they are regarded as premium build and carry a price tag to match. I think at this level it’s more about how discerning one wants to be and the value of owning something that’s unique and authentic.
It seems the ideology behind the T-Rex project is to recreate the key components to the tone/character like the wire/drum assembly, whist staying as faithful as possible using modern production and assembly methods to make them relatively more affordable, reliable and require less maintenance. How well they have achieved this will be down to actual comparative performance, time proven reliability and customer perception of the blend of vintage/modern under their resurrection of the Binson branding?
As one would expect, there is always going to be comparisons when a new product is released, particularly when it’s a modern reproduction of such an iconic vintage design. The Strymon Volante has attracted interest because it’s getting really positive reviews from members and is very much more affordable, It’s a quality product supported by a company with an excellent reputation and it appears a lot of thought has gone into the design to give it more of a generic feel to the magnetic echoes of the day. The Volante has a Binson style head arrangement with “Drum” emulation, a lot of ability to fine tune the wear and the “flaws” that add to the distinctive character of the vintage echoes, combined with stereo paths, MIDI and all the modern attributes that many will be seeking.
I recently purchased a Volante and for me it has provided much of that elusive tone/character that I have been seeking for a long time without breaking the bank. One of the things that caught my attention was the Class A JFET analogue path prior to the advanced chip power of the digital algorithms, overall it comes together to give the feel of using a vintage unit without the hassle, it also does what it says in being a “Magnetic Echo Machine” that has the potential to cover other echo units and tape saturation effects.
People will have their own idea’s and perceptions as to whats important to them, but in my opinion it’s all good that we have the interest from the manufacturers and these options are available to us!
Regards
Gary

Hi Gary You have well pinpointed the different values that one wants in your exposé. Thanks for that precise description. Having played a BINSON in my younger times, I would love to try the new one. SHeendigs

Hi Gary,
I've been reading you comments on the Strymon, and as a result of your very positive and great walk-through I'm sitting with one in front of me now (probably have to hold you accountable for that investment :-)). I can see that you have shared some quick getting started info with Steve & Adrian above, could I have a copy of that as well?
