Hi Everyone
Just wondered what your thoughts are regarding the above. Was wondering if it would improve my 'shad sound' if I used it before my Magicstomp ?
Also, could anyone recommend a good one ?

Hi Charlie & Friends, Welcome aboard Jimmy, I'm sure you'll like it here, lots of info to sift through and a friendly bunch to boot. It's handy to know what to listen for with compressors, a good example is Atlantis. The lead guitar has a lot of compression applied to it, I don't know if this was done while playing or after recording. I use a Boss CS 2 which sometimes come up on the well known auction site and can be a bit pricey, I find it very good. I've heard the CS 3 can be a bit noisy but can't confirm this myself. It might be worth taking a look on Harmony Central if you have a model in mind and see what other people think. Here's the link:- www.harmony-central.com/Hope this helps, Regards, Tim.

Hi Jimmy, Welcome to the site. It is worth noting that Hank never used a compressor on the early hits as they weren't available as a pedal effect then. But compression would have often been applied in the studio, effectively to the whole of Hanks sound coming out of his amp, which in those days included the echo. I tend to think it is an unnecessary effect for most of this type of music, although placing a compressor with suitably subtle (in most cases) settings after the echo unit instead of between the guitar and echo can be an interesting thing to try. Regards, Charlie

The September '09 edition of 'Sound on Sound' has an interesting article about 'Compression', followed by a run-down on various commercial compression units available. Len

Thanks to you all for the warm welcome and sorry for the spelling mistake !
I'll look at the threads for more info. Charlie's words were very interesting as usual - it's great to learn these things but the beauty of this site is all the fantastic knowledge that can be passed on.

Hi guys, I have a boss CS3 on my board. Just wondering if anybody has an ideal'ish setting for the attack and sustain controls for the intro to Atlantis. I use the pedal only on this song to level the volume out a bit if I hit the strings too hard etc. Any assistance would be most appreciated.
Thanks
Neil

Hi Neil, The very first note of Atlantis sounds to me like the attack time is short, so I would set the attack time to less than halway. Set the sustain control to wherever it sounds best, I imagine it would be around half to two thirds. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie
Will give them suggested settings a try later on. Its only a subtle ammount of compression I'm looking for to level the volume out a bit on the 12th fret parts. I always seem to get one note louder than the other higher up the fretboard playing that particular intro.
Thanks for the advice
Neil
