Hi all,
Does anyone know if Hank played in his earlier years over Vox Amp`s with EF 86 channels? (Or Top Boost)
Especially for the earlier recordings of Apache, Atlantis and so on.
Cheers!
Gerd

Hi Gerd, Apache is definitely not the top boost channel because top boost had not been introduced by Vox at that time. It is still possible that it might not have been an EF86 though, because the Vox AC15 of the time, which was almost certainly used, had the EF86 in one channel and the 12AX7/ECC83 in the other channel. I am not sure if Atlantis was with top boost, but I would guess it probably was. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie,
Thank you for reply, I ask because I own a Vox hertitage, with EF86 and Top Boost on board, therefore I want to use the right channel for the right song, or is it generally better to use the EF86 channel for the older songs?
Regards, Gerd

Hi Gerd, I think most Heritage users would use the EF86 channel for the older tunes. Regards, Charlie

Hi Gerd
As another Heritage owner I agree with Charlie. The EF86 channel is certainly the one for the early tunes (with the Brilliance switch on 2) and, if you haven't tried it already, this channel also gives a great "modern" Hank sound, especially with a Strat fitted with Kinmans. In fact, I find that these days I don't use the Top Boost channel very often and when I do it's mainly for tunes from the "Burns Era" (for which it is very good indeed).
Cheers.
Tony

It is still possible that it might not have been an EF86 though, because the Vox AC15 of the time, which was almost certainly used, had the EF86 in one channel and the 12AX7/ECC83 in the other channel. There are many clues showing that Hank mostly used the tremolo channel (even when not using the tremolo), hence an ECC83 with the bass cut filter, rather than the EF86 channel. A few people I know who got excellent early sound emulation use the ECC83 and bass cut filter combination (among other things), and have long stopped using an EF86 channel. Didier
