That makes me feel a whole lot better. Some players do sound more like Hank than Hank.

I could never understand why they changed to Burns in the first place, I guess it's the case of, do something different and update the image, it never worked for me.

Hi Phil, It was because they were having tuning problems with Strats that caused the change. Regards, Charlie

Thanks, I did'nt know that, I did know about Bruce's obsession with tuning though!.....so why did they change back to unlockable tuned Strats?

Hi Phil, One or more items were stolen from the Shadows van, in the late 60s I think. One item was Hank's Burns, not sure if anything else was taken. I think it would have been difficult to replace as Jim Burns had sold the company to Baldwin. I suppose when the Strats were reverted to there was more knowledge generally about set ups. Regards, Charlie

If I remember rightly, Bruce did drop out of the Shadows for a while. Probably could explain why he is not present in that clip. Regards, Charlie

Hi all I think around that time with Bruce not being in the clip, he was having girl trouble, namely Olivia Newton John so he mentions in his book. I have just this minute taken her picture down off my wall. How could she Regards John

Hi
Charlie is right about the Burns theft. It happened in the performers car park at the rear of the London Palladium.
By this time Jennings Musical Industries were handling Fender UK and I think I'm right in saying that JMI gave Hank and Bruce and possibly Jet new guitars as a promotional thing, they were however Rose wood fret boards as against the early Cliff Strat that Hank played which had a maple neck/board.
The rose wood board Strats were played the longest by the Shads and in my opinion should have been the signature model. As much as I like Burns guitars, the Fender Strat must come out on top as the definitive sound we are all so familiar with.
Merry Christmas
Peter

I'm hoping someone reading this may be able to help me. Several years ago I found a youtube clip from a Shadows club. It was an awesome delivery of The savage and the lead guitarist was a young fellow - looked about seventeen and played left handed. It was taken in what looked like a living/lounge room. I am hoping to send it to a friend in France. The rest of the group was 'mature' - like me!

Hi.
Sorry that I am a little late in to this, I have also heard that shadows had problems with the Strat's to stay in tune. I have owned Strat's since 1964 and never had that problem and why do not Hank has problem to day he is playing Strat's for more than 30 years now and it is as close it can be the same instrument? I think it is something else and my guess is, there is money in the game.
Kind Regards, 26rednef

I never did subscribe to that out of tune story, and I was playing strats during this period. I think there must have been other reasons. No other strat players have been documented as having that problem.

Daniel often plays at clubs with "scratch" bands and this may be what you saw on Youtube. Cheers George

I never did buy the Strat tuning issues story either. I agree with 26rednef that there may have been money involved. That's just my opinion.

My MIJ '62 Strat reissue is now around 18 years old and getting 'worn' in places. Frets need replacing, lacquer cracking badly on the back, some hardware going rusty. It's been heavily gigged over the years. (sometimes 3-4 times a week) I'm only semi-pro but very busy. I tune the guitar when it needs it, maybe twice in a gig. I've got a Korg guitar synth pickup on it, so the tuner is digital. It's utterly ACE. There are times I go to the next gig and don't need to touch it. It's the most tuning-reliable guitar I've ever had. Tuning is rock solid live, even with hefty trem use. I had a Squier Strat years ago and it was AWFUL. Even after a pro setup, tuning was dire. Some chords in tune, others yards out. Sadly, a Burns Marquee I had a few years ago was pretty dodgy too. My new Anniversary Marvin seems great so far. I've seen Hank and co twice in 'recent' years, and live, he sounds amazing, but not the 'same' as a CD.

Ambient temperature has a lot to do with tuning going off!
My Strat tuning does vary, even during the day as the temperature rises, then falls back in the evening.
I'm using a Rebel quartz tuner BTW.
James.
