Not sure if I'm altogether happy with this as it was originally played on a Burns, so I may play around with it as I feel the treble pickup on the strat is a little harsh, even though I've increased the bass and reduced the treble just enough so I don't lose the liveliness. I think the tone is close to Hank's 1999 sound. Any views on how to improve the tone using a strat will be welcomed. Cheers Ian www.4shared.com/audio/Hm3COwpL/01_Atlantis.html

Hi Ian,
I think your tone for Atlantis is spot-on and wouldn't change a thing. I loved that sound. Very well played too.
Any chance of posting your line-up/set-up?
Kind regards Roger

Well played Ian and great sound. You have a really good sound and you have shown what can be done without the lastest gear. I would not concern yourself with your sound, enjoy and keep posting excellent sound files. Tony

Good Morning Roger, Ian, loujones12, Bill and Tony.
I am really overwhelmed by all of your replies and support for my posting of Atlantis. It has encouraged me to keep this track rather than delete it.
Thank you for all your positive replies and in answer to the request from Roger and Lou my setup for this is as follows:
2005, '62 type Japanese reissue with Fender '57/'62 pickups using Treble pickup
Strings Dean Markley vintage, gauge 9-42
Vox Tonelab ST set to AC15 with 1x12" speaker sim Treble 6 Mid 4.9 Bass 2.6 Comp 2.9
Quad+ with Charlie's excellent Atlantis patch.
Recorded into Fostex MR-8HD
I hope this helps and thanks again to all
Cheers Ian

Hi Ian, I similarly agree that you have a really great sound here. I also have the TonelabST and I've just been experimenting with your settings. On the amp settings switch located just above the chicken knob, do you use the green, orange or red setting?
Aside from the strings and country of origin strat ('07 Mex. with Elixir 10s), our equipment is similar as I also use 57/62s. I'm going through a Q2 but the echoes should be pretty much the same and I've also tried my Burns Marvin for comparison but I'm not quite getting the tone you're achieving. I find the Tonelab's compression can be too clicky - it has few subtleties and only one control so I shouldn't expect too much I suppose. Having said that, the original recording that I firmly believe was done using a prototype Burns, has a very compressed and brittle tone and I can hear the pickup recording his finger movements. To be honest, the original doesn't make comfortable listening for me with the strings and chorals each heavily sent right or left and sounds much better in mono - I'm referring to the UBHank stereo demo of Atlantis, which I think I'm right in thinking is the original Shads recording? Sorry - I've waffled enough in my musings. Again I concur that you've done a grand job with this track. Cheers, Martyn

Hi Ian, I think this is a better sound than I have ever heard Hank playing this tune, that includes the original recording. Although very well played, I suspect that you might want to consider your timing and/or playing technique above any sound changes. Using a separate compressor instead of the Tonelab's compressor might improve the compressed effect for when you need it. Regards, Charlie

Hello Martyn Thank you very much for your positive impressions. I found your information about the original Shadows recording interesting as it is all unknown to me and I do not have a copy it.
As for the amp setting switch I have it set on the green. I don't understand exactly what you say about the compression being too clicky. I feel it is too weak and doesn't help me any, so I may revert back to my Boss compressor. Mind you I could never get the hang of that either and put it away when I got the Tonelab. So it looks like a bit more experimenting for me.
Hope the green light setting gets you closer to the tone you're after.
Regards Ian

Hi Charlie
Thank you very much for your terrific comment. Coming from you with your experience that is a real acolade for me. Yes I agree my timing is suspect in parts, though I did try and smooth the timing to make the tune less jerky. I guess that wasn't a smart move, so will work on that. I will be digging out that Boss compressor and give it a try, though I do find it somewhat noisy.
The amazing thing about this forum is that any views expressed are so well intentioned and designed to spur us on to achieve better results.
My thanks to all who commented.
Regards Ian

Hi Ian,
I'd always assumed that the original was played on a Strat. I think you get a sound very close to the original whatever guitar the tune was originally played on. As Charlie, said, there are some timing issues but it sounded good to me overall. I can't help you at all on the use of compression. It was nice playing anyway and you are certainly getting there with The Sound. Thanks for sharing it.
Regards, Len

Hi Len
Thank you for your thoughts on my post. Yes, you're absolutely right, there are some timing issues, which were deliberate to try and achieve a smoother run of notes, but didn't work at all.
I'm now addressing this and will try not to be so clever in future.
Regards Ian
