It can be done in two ways. Number one is to use the volume control on the guitar. Hit the string, then with your little finger rotate the volume from zero, or thereabouts, up to max. It takes lots of practice to get it right! The other (easy) way is just to use a volume (or swell) pedal between the guitar and amp.

I have never seen Hank using the volume knob method, he always uses a volume pedal. Didier

Heres a recording of "Argentina" I did with some friends a while back. I used a korg AX1000 floor unit with the pedal set to volume for the swell effect. Its not used too often but its just to show how a pedal gives the effect. Ive never used the volume control method .. I find it too awkward. www.shadz.co.uk/audio/argentina.mp3

Hi all, I would like to know with pedal comes the nearest in swelling sound for songs as "The Deer Hunter", and of course that one from "The most beautul girl" that gives such a nice swelling effect... Thank you all for reply.

Hi I bought a Boss FV-50H last year and found it really good but other members will probably have more information about which is the best. (I've been using the Zoom G2.1Nu 's pedal since late last year but had more success with the Boss pedal although others get very good effects with the Zoom's pedal.) Best wishes Rosemary

For those who find using the volume pot for this effect difficult watch Jeff Beck, he is the absolute master of that technique.
Mike.

Hank's "violin" sound on the Deerhunter and Cavatina was made with a Morley VBO pedal. One from the first series, the large silver ones... before the slimline series... Later on stage he used the Boss FV300H, last shads tour in 2005 it was on stage....the last one with Cliff no volume pedal was used. The Most Beautiful Girl...that's a DeArmond 610 volume/tone pedal. Up en down movement is volume, sideways is tone alteration. I have all three of them and i must say, the Morley works best. Hope this helps a little.

I do have a Boss ME-70 but the pedal is too severe in its range.
I mainly use an old Morley pedal as it has a volume adjustment and the travel of the pedal is really smooth and the swell sound is nice and controlled with it.

"Whata misteka da meka" ;D Cavatina has to be Argentina Duhh The older Morley's using a light bulp and light sensetive cell....thats why they are working so smooth. The later use a pot,not so smooth in travel.

Hank used a swell pedal (at least on the first 'Hank Marvin' LP.) There's a B/W picture of him playing with the orchestra on the reverse using a white Burns Marvin and his foot is in mid position on a swell pedal. Very clear picture - there's another B/W picture of him playing a greenburst Marvin in a studio, inside the same album CD case. The guitar is connected to the same pedal via a 'curly' lead. He obviously liked that pedal at the time. Someone with 'pedal' knowledge could no doubt easily identify it if you want the 'same' sound. Roy.

Roy,
That pedal on the b/w picture on Hanks first solo album is a DeArmond 610 volume/tone pedal...the same as I mentioned above in a previouse reply. ;D

Well done that man - (Bor 64) I knew someone would put a name to the pedal. I've actually got an ANCIENT (and I mean ANCIENT) Carlsbro swell pedal that is now getting a bit 'creaky', but I'm used to it after around 40 years! Roy.
