Hi John! You're using thicker strings than I do, I use 10 - 46. When I mounted the tremblock on the guitar, I first thigtened all the 6 schrews that holds the tremblock. Then I put on strings and tuned the strings up. Ofcourse I hd put the springs on. Then I losened all the shrews until I got the gap I wanted at the back of the tremblock. ( every 6 schrews). Then I tuned the guitar again, and thigtened the springs until the tremblock started moving Down in the back. Then loosened it until it was back in the right position again. Another tunig before adjusting string hights, nack and doing the intonation. Mine is very easy to use, and I don't have to force it Down. And the guitar stays very well tuned. If you have thightened all schrews, the pressure you put on the tremarm will og to the guitarbody. I know that some thinks that just schrew no. 1 and 6 shall be loosened, and all the others thightened, and others do as I do. You have to try to find what is the right thing to do for Your guiter and Your strings. If you don't get it as you want to, give Ian St. John White an e- mail and ask for help. I am sure he will give you the very best service! Good Luck!

Arnulf: I understood that screws 1 and 6 should be tightened and the others slacked off a few turns ?

Ok Frank, you may be right about the schrews. It's 3 years since I did the job, and I might have misunderstood the English text. There's very little written in Norwegian about this. I got my arm mounted in the tremblock by Ian St. John White, so it's it not the push-in solution I've got.
I am not sure, and don't remember where I found out how to do the set up. But it Works perfectly!
I used You tube a lot, and the Fender stratocaster handbook.

Thanks everyone for the great advice. Arnulf, my trem set-up has the two outer screws just meeting the trem plate with the other four slackened off as per Fender's advice. I have 10s on my other guitar (an OLP Music Man copy) and the trem is much lighter so I think it's probably down to the strings as you suggest.
Dave - a lot of Hank's tone seems to do with picking the strings close to the neck pup, would a shorter trem arm bring the pick closer to the middle one and therefore create a brighter sound? It would solve the problem of accidentally hitting the raised D string pole piece when 'digging in'.
All the best
John

A quick up-date. I decided to try out the StayTrem offset arm (version 2) and I love it. I chose the 130mm version and it brings my picking hand to exactly the right position for me at just behind the neck pickup. As a bonus, the service from John at StayTrem was first class with the arm arriving on the next working day from when it was ordered.
