Hi Charlie & Aussy Barry
As a previous thread of your welcoming me will soon be deleted, I have started this new thread to thank you both for your warm welcome. Here is my previous message:
Hi Charlie and Aussie Barry
Thanks for the nice welcome.
Its good to be here and I will comment whenever I can. These sites are about supporting each other and after the problems we had with MSN, things have seemed to have turned out OK. Proboards is the fastest loading program I have found and its easy to use.
I would have liked Proboards to have been able to add photos, etc from my PC but this would use a great deal of space that would make the site unworkable. Posting stuff to a host site like 4 shared and using that works fine for photos, sound files and videos.
Its very hot and sticky in Perth at the moment but I cant complain as we have had some fab weather unlike the freezing temps in UK and Europe.

Hi Spike, It's good to have you here and I look forward to your posts. Proboards is apparently the largest concern of its type today according to Wikipedia. I have found it to be much faster than msn. It does seem to hang once in a while although it could be due to my internet connection as well. One of the neatest things with Proboards is being able to have a YouTube video play right within the message. I also like the fact that when you click on a sound file link, it opens up a new window (at least on my system) whereas with msn it used to leave the site and then I would have to use the back button to go back. I don't think it's as cold here as it was at the moment, although I haven't been out today. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie
Thanks again!!
Re Youtube, I have found that if you record something in stereo, it seems to play it back in mono. This is happening with 4 shared which plays it the way its recorded.
I wonder if any other of your members have noticed this.
The only other thing I liked about MSN was you could check a thread where if someone commented, it would be sent to youre email in box. I dont suppose Proboards has that facility.
Cheers Spike

Hi Spike, I hadn't really noticed whether sounds from YouTube or 4shared were in stereo or mono. YouTube converts files into flv files so it possibly converts stereo to mono during that process. I'll make a point of checking next time I listen to something that I would expect to be in stereo. I think someone did comment on it a while back so it's probably right. I didn't quite understand what you meant by saying 4shared plays it as it was recorded because if it was recorded in stereo then you must be meaning it played back in stereo, or am I confused? I think Proboards might have that email facility. There is an option in the member profile settings to Opt in or Opt out of Mass Emails so that could well be it. Opt out is the default setting. I can't imagine what else it could mean unless it is to receive messages from Proboards itself. I daren't try it myself as I receive too many emails as it is (not really, it keeps me busy). Regards, Charlie

Yes with 4 shared plays it as how it sounds on your system. With YouTube in some cases I found it not to be the case.
Re the mass email setting...thanks...I will check it out and see if I can get it to do that.

Hi Charlie
On my site and even here on your site, my settings show that I am set as opt-in. THis means I should be gettting mass emails and I'm not. I dont quite understand this feature. If I put in opt-out it suggests the opposite to what I want. Maybe I might change my settings here to opt out and see what happens. What do you reckon?

Hi Spike, Mine is set to Opt Out and always has been. I believe it is the default setting as I never altered it. On the other hand, the site was set up for me. I have never had an email from Proboards. I would have received one or two if my membership application had been done by myself. Regards, Charlie

Hi Spike, I've had a look at a few other member's settings and all of them were set to Opt In. There is a facility for admin to send a single email to every member. It must be for that. So you had better set yours back to Opt In. Now I wonder why mine was set to Opt Out? Could it have been done deliberately so that I didn't see something that was being told to others? Or perhaps it was harmless and because I wouldn't need a copy of something that I had sent myself.
To all members, Has anyone ever received an email from this site other than during the registration process? If so, could you let me know what it was about, or if you prefer, forward a copy to me by email? Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie
I will set mine back to opt in.
I hope nothing underhanded was done with your settings as opt- in is the default on all proboards sites.

Hi Spike, I hope not too. The thing is, I don't remember it being mentioned to me as to why mine was set like that. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie and all, I set my receive mass emails to opt-out simply as a matter of course. If I can opt-out of unsollicited emails/normal post /telephone calls I do. I haven't changed anyone else's (certainly not Charlie's) nor even looked at everyone else's setting. The facility to email everyone has been abused on another forum but I suppose there is always that possibility with everything; not likely to happen here now unless a hacker gets in. I'm in two minds now whether to change my setting to opt-in.
As far as I know, what happens is that the forum admin can send out one email to everyone who is a registered member which they receive in their normal email (i.e. at the address they have given as their email address). This is potentially useful to reach those members who do not look in to the forum very often. The content of the email can obviously be anything but is most likely to either be some announcement relating to the board (moving/major change/new attractive feature) that everyone should know (even those who don't look in often) or it could be an advert for Charlie's business (a new set of programmes etc). It might actually be useful now to let those who have been discouraged know that all is well again.
The alternative is for admin to send a PM to everyone. The difference being that the members will only receive it if they login.

Hi Bill, That's more or less what I realised eventually.
Hi Brian, Thanks for letting us know you never had any emails. That would be because we never sent any, as far as I know. It looks like there is no possibility on Proboards for having the equivalent of the msn feature.

Hi Spike, Not sure but I would have thought yes, as the member's email address would be in the system. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie
Lets hope so as its hard to check to see if they have or havent received it. I'm not that Proboards literate so I cant say with confidence what might happen with emails.

Hi All, Just confirming the mass email option is to allow admin to send an email to all members. However a member's account must be activated before they will receive the email.
Also the following is from the Proboards support site and explains how thread email notification works.
Hope this helps. regards George
