Hi All,
Here is my modest tribute to the composer and the singer of one of the most beautiful song of our time. This song has had an emotional impact on me as no other has. Not as clean as Lars's version as I am using the original recording as a backing track and playing some double-stops at times. I am using the 50th Anniversary Deluxe I won about 5 years ago. I tried to play it in the spirit, but the original is inimitable (as are Charlie's echoes I am using). I couldn't listen to Pete's version as I think he removed the link.
I hope you like it:
Blessings, Abel

Hi Abel!
Nice to hear your version. Maybe I add some doublestops on my version later on when playing the high notes. Thanks for sharing.
Best regards! Lars G. Vinger

Hi Abel
What fasinates me about this site is that regularly something comes up that brings back a memory from oh so long ago. When I first heard the vocal version of Sukiyaki it was around 1962 (I think) I was so engrossed with the song and didn't even know what the Japanease words were saying, and I still dont. I bought the 45"disk and after many many replays I taught myself to sing the song in Japanease. As a young lad the song certainly grabbed me. It was actually on this site where I first heard the instro version and I congratulate the players. I also enjoyed your version very much. Would you mind telling me how you get that effect around )0.53 and at the start of the Chorus at 1.54, I hope this makes sense, Is it a volume pedal combined with the tremelo arm??. Thank you so much for these memories.
Val

Hi Abel, Super version with super sound and playing.
Hi Val, It sounds like a volume pedal to me.
Regards, Charlie

Hi All,
Glad you liked it. The backing from the original makes my version sound better than it is. I am only using the tremolo arm Hank Marvin style of bending the arm just before hitting the note. I guess I could have applied a little bit less echo to make it clearer. After receiving lots of (kind) criticism from the Youtube viewers about the boring and hectic room background, I asked my wife for a cover and she gave me the motif sheet you see behind me.

HI Charlie and Abel
Thanks for the info on the sound. It's an interesting effect which I have heard many times on Hanks CD's. And yes I have seen a player do a similar effect but not on a Shadow tune. He also had a volume pedal and used the tremelo arm, hence my question. But I was never sure if he used both to perform the effect as I never really saw his foot move. Thank you again.

Hi all, Val and Charlie, The only 2 songs in which I ever used my Earnie Ball volume swell pedal are "Cavatina" and "A Place In the Sun". As a matter of fact, I made a mistake in our last recording with my band "The International Men Of Mystery". I used the volume pedal for "A Place In the Sun" (and later realized it was a Wah Wah that Hank used in the original, maybe also combined with a swell pedal). In fact it didn't come out good at all, the depth of the swell wasn't strong enough, or maybe I didn't know how to use it. It would have been preferable for me to use the tremolo arm instead of the swell pedal. Here is a portion of our recording: (The rhythm guitar came out a bit too loud somehow) akhineche.com/Track10_A_Place_In_The_Sun_Short_2.mp3Blessings, Abel
